A Magical Cornish Village
Doc Martin is
IN
Consulting Room
Martin's consulting room is really at the heart of the show and the majority of scenes are filmed
in this room.  The room is filled with antique furniture and a lot of decor items.  There is also a
definite Asian flair for the decor in the room.  Every series there were changes in the room - new
items brought in, items leaving the room (and often showing up in other rooms in the surgery)
and items moved from one area of the room to another one.  One exception was in Series 3
where all kinds of changes happened halfway through the series.  I still haven't figured out a
good reason for that - maybe one day I will get to talk to the prop masters.  At the beginning of
Series 4 there were some big changes to the type of furniture and the way the room was
decorated (and big changes in other areas of the surgery).  I put this down to Martin needing to
make some changes after Louisa left Portwenn.  Maybe it has nothing to do with any of that - but
that's my theory!

Front Left Corner
.
Martin had the room ready to receive patients in Episode 2. He has replaced the
old wooden cabinets with modern steel-front cabinets.  There is a double door
hanging cabinet with a matching double door cabinet below.  To the right is
what appears to be a small white fridge.  Then, along the left wall behind the
desk, more steel-front lower cabinets with a sink.

Here is a layout of the Consulting Room starting in
Episode 2 of the first series.

For information about the changes to the room

.
For Series 2, there was a lot of set building, and in the process, several feet were
added to the left and right walls of this room.  You can see pictures showing this at
the bottom of the
"S1-S2 Consulting Room comparison" page.

They also moved these cabinets.  The double hanging and base cabinets were
moved right to the corner and a third hanging section was added, the white fridge
is gone and the 3 sections of lower cabinets w/sink (one drawer unit and a double
door unit) were moved left to make one long cabinet and countertop.

The red framed painting has been moved to the wall behind Martin's desk and
replaced by a hanging light.  A wooden/leather chair has been added.
.
.
Series 2
.

.
The wooden/leather chair is gone and Martin's rolling stool is against the wall
when not in use.  The only other change is the addition of a hand towel dispenser
on the end of the hanging cabinets.  In S1 & S2 he kept a pile of blue hand towels
right next to the sink - see insert picture.

Series 3 - 4

The only change is that Dr Dibbs has brought in a new wooden chair.  Martin keeps
the chair and it remains there through S5 & S6.

The chair is gone (possibly moved to the other side of the door and
re-upholstered?) and replaced by a blue step stool.  The step stool had been
along the left wall behind Martin's desk during S5 & S6.

Left Wall (behind desk)
.
This wall consists mainly of steel-front cabinets with a sink, starting from near the
front wall and stretching to the built-in cupboard near the back corner.  In the
middle of the two cabinet sections is a small white fridge.  Very colorful wallpaper
lines the interior of the cupboard.

For Series 2, there was a lot of set building, and in the process, several feet were
added to the left and right walls of this room.  You can see pictures showing this at
the bottom of the
"S1-S2 Consulting Room comparison" page.

They also removed the small fridge and moved all of the cabinets together and right
to the corner.  This freed up space for a piece of furniture behind Martin's desk.
For this series they added a white metal trash receptacle at the end of the counter
and what appears to be a closed wooden secretary behind the desk.

On top of the secretary is a black goose-neck task lamp, several books and the
large Asian cabinet that was on the mantel in S1.  The red framed painting that
hung right next to the door in S1 is now hanging above the secretary.
.
.
Series 2
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Both secretaries used in S2 are gone and replaced by a 3 drawer wooden file
cabinet that was on the back wall between the windows in S1 & S2.  On top of the
cabinet are a potted plant and a small wooden box.
.
.
Series 3
.
.
.
.
.
A new piece of furniture appeared in this series.  It was a wooden cabinet topped
by a tall wooden hutch.  Lots of book on the upper shelves and on the bottom
shelf, a crystal lamp, the small wooden box we saw in the beginning of S3, a square
clock, and a fabric box.  The red framed painting is gone.
.
.
Series 4
.
.
.
.
Dr Dibbs changed this room considerably - and Martin didn't change much when he
took back over in Episode 2.  Behind the desk is now what looks like an old dresser
that has been painted to match the walls.  This piece will remain there at least
through S7.  Dr Dibbs has several items on top, including a brass lamp with
red shade, a plant, and a tall wooden box.  When Martin takes over he removes
the plant and adds his Golden Buddha on top of the wooden box.

There is also a new painting on the wall above - a pastoral scene.

In addition, there is a new blue step stool next to the metal trash receptacle.
.
.
Series 5
.
.
.
.
.
For the Christmas Special between S2 and
S3 there were a lot of changes in this
room.  A different secretary was behind
the desk and it was open and contained
lots of items.  Included in them was one of
the small Buddhas that was located in the
Kitchen in S1 and on the other side of the
Consulting Room in S2.
.
.
In Episode 3, a lot of furniture was moved
around - and remained for the rest of the
series.  The wooden file cabinet was
moved back between the back windows
and a new drop leaf secretary was placed
behind Martin's desk.

On top were a wooden cabinet that was
between the back windows for the
first 2 episodes of the series, a small
bowl, and a small wooden clock.  Several
items were on the 1/2 dropped leaf.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Note that the dresser is
missing one of the
knobs.

It's still missing! (S8)
.
.
In Episode 2, when Martin is
attending to Aunt Ruth's cut
hand, the Gold Buddha
mysteriously moves off the
wooden box to the cabinet top.

In the next episode it's back in
place and remains there the
rest of the series.
.
.
Some changes to the items on the dresser top this series.  The lamp has been
replaced by a very similar one.  This one has a straight brass stem instead of the
twisted one from last series, and the red shade is slightly smaller and more angled.
The taller wooden box is gone and replaced by one we saw there in S3 & S4.

The pastoral painting that Dr Dibbs had brought is now gone and the red framed
floral picture is back.
.
.
Series 6
.
.
.
.
.
There is one episode with slightly different
objects on the dresser.  In Episode 3, the
first scene when Martin is treating Robert
Campbell who was brought in by the
fishermen, the items are all as usual.

But in the only other two scenes, Becky (the
young girl who wrote the bad review for
Bert's Restaurant), and Martin cleaning the
cut on his hand at the end of the episode,
the items are different.

The red lamp from S5 is back (with the
twisted brass stem), the wooden box is
moved to the center, the Gold Buddha and
the books are gone, and a turquoise vase
that usually resides on the other side of
the room is there.
.
.
More changes to the dresser top.  The lamp and the decorative wooden box are
gone and the plain wooden box from the back left corner in S6, and a shallow
decorative bowl are there.  Also, the Gold Buddha with the attached base is
back - see the "Gold Buddha" page for more on that.
.
.
Series 7
.
.
.
.
But, for some reason, they moved the items
around in Episode 4 and they remained that
way the rest of the series.  The Gold Buddha
was moved to the left side and the wooden
box was moved to the right side.

There is also a funny thing that they did with
the Gold Buddha.  Starting in Episode 4, they
went back and forth with it being the one
with or without the base.  Again, see the
"Gold Buddha" page for the details.  I think
the Props Department were playing around
with us!

Back Left Corner
.
The back corner behind Martin's desk has a very short wall before it goes into a
bay for the window.  There is usually one small picture hanging there and
sometimes a small table below.

In Series 1, the first time Martin is seeing patients in Episode 2, there is nothing
on the wall.  I wonder if they noticed how dark it was back there, because in
Episode 3 a picture was placed there - and the wall has never been blank since.
This seems to be some type of harbour scene with boats, maybe?

In the first two series there were no tables in that corner.
.
.
Series 1
.
.
.
A new picture.  It looks like possibly a road with tall trees on either side?

In the Christmas Episode between S2 & S3 they added a table for the first time.
This was to hold a fax machine, which became part of the storyline.
.
.
Series 2
.
.
.
.
.
Another new picture.  This one might be a meandering river?  The same table with
fax machine from the previous episode.  A lot of furniture in this room was moved
around in Episode 3 so there is a different table that remained there for the rest of
the series.  This one had been in the right front corner at the beginning of S3.
.
.
Series 3
.
.
.
.
The picture wasn't changed this time, but a new drop-leaf table was added along
with a lamp and a new fax machine - probably a combo fax/printer.
.
.
Series 4
.
.
.
.
Dr Dibbs added a wooden corner cabinet high up on the wall.  I have no idea why -
we've never seen it used.  She also has a wooden table below with a plant and
some books.  This is the table that was between the back windows in the
beginning of Series 3.  Martin kept the cabinet and the table, but got rid of the
plant.  The fax/printer is sitting on a stool under the table.  She also hung a
small picture - but I can't make out what it is.
.
.
Series 5
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
I noticed something odd in
Episode 8.  When Martin was
examining Clive for his arthritis,
in some shots you can see the
wooden corner cabinet, but
others it looks like the cabinet
isn't there.  Notice how close the
picture is to the cabinet in one
shot and how much wall space is
visible on the other one.  The
funny thing is this is all one
scene - just different shots.
.
.
There is another new picture on the wall.  It appears to be a sketch of a young boy.
We have another new table - another drop-leaf, but not the same as the one in S4.
There's a plain wooden box and books.  No fax/printer anymore.
.
.
Series 6
.
.
.
.
We've seen this sketch of the young boy
before.  It's in Louisa's red bedroom in S3.

I like to think that Louisa gave it to him to
hang in his office to remind him of his son
while he is working.  It's still there in S7.
.
.
The sketch of the boy is still on the wall.  The drop-leaf table is still there at the
beginning of Episode 1 and it now has the decorative wooden box that we have
seen before behind Martin's desk.  But during the episode it moves back and forth
a couple of times over to the bay in the adjacent window.  Starting in Episode 2 it
stayed under the window for the rest of the series.

Back Wall
.
The back wall consists of two bay windows with a small wall area between.  The left
window bay contained a small table that matched Martin's silver desk.  This table
was there all through S1 & S2 and disappeared in the Christmas Episode between
S2 & S3 - never to appear again.  The clock Martin was working on often sat on
top of the table.  Under the right bay window is a white wall radiator - and that
has been there in every episode.

In between the windows there is always a piece of furniture with objects on top.
In S1 it was a wooden three drawer filing cabinet.  On top were the Gold Buddha
and a green glass Banker's lamp.
.
.
Series 1
.
.
.
Everything is the same with the exception of the Gold Buddha.  It has been moved
to the living room and a small, ornate wooden clock has taken its place.  The small
metal table is still in the left bay, the wooden file cabinet in the middle, and the
Banker's lamp still on top.
.
.
Series 2
.
.
.
The small metal table has disappeared from the left bay and that area will remain
empty until S7.  In the middle there is a new wooden table with a wooden cabinet
on top.  The White Buddha is there (moved from the back right corner in S2) and
the Banker's lamp remains there.  The wooden file cabinet was moved to behind
Martin's desk.
.
.
Series 3
.
.
.
.
The wooden file cabinet has disappeared and the small splayed leg wooden table
has been moved here (it spent time in S3 in the front right corner and the back left
corner).  The Gold Buddha is back (the White Buddha has been moved to the Living
Room) and a new silver Banker's lamp shares the space.
.
.
Series 4
.
.
.
.
When Dr Dibbs moves in, she brings a small wooden secretary that she puts in the
left window bay and a large glass-front wooden cabinet in the middle.  The large
piece disappears after that first episode and Martin moves the small secretary
between the windows - where it will stay through S7.  On top of the secretary he
places a tall narrow lamp (this lamp was on the mantel with a different shade in
Series 3), a light green glass pitcher and matching glass.  All through S5 these
items will exchange places on top of the secretary and in a couple of scenes in
Episode 2 the lamp disappears altogether.  There is also asmall upholstered chair
under the right window.
.
.
Series 5
.
.
.
.
.
.
The only changes are the glassware pieces.  The light green pitcher and glass are
gone and replaced by a bronze glass pitcher and two other light green glasses.
The upholstered chair is gone.
.
.
Series 6
.
.
.
.
In Episode 1, the drop-leaf table from the back left corner moves back and forth
from there to under the left window. Starting in Episode 2 it remains under the
window for the rest of the series and has the decorative wooden box on top.  In
the middle, the lamp remains on top of the secretary for the whole series, but
moves from the left to the right starting in Episode 6.  On the right is a wooden
chair with a dark green leather seat

But the glassware keeps changing all through the series.  It starts out in Episode
1 with the light green glass pitcher from S5 back, but this time paired up with the
light green glasses from S6.  In Episodes 2, 3 & 4 the pitcher disappears and we
only see the two glasses.  Then, halfway through Episode 4, the green glasses
disappear and are replaced by a heavy amber glass pitcher and matching glass.  In
Episode 5, the amber pieces are gone and the two green glasses are back.  In
Episode 6 the green glasses are gone and the amber pitcher and glass are back.
Again, they're playing with us!
.
.
Series 7
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
In Episode 4, a lot of furniture was moved around.  The wooden file cabinet
returned to between the windows.  The wooden cabinet that had been on top of
the table was moved to behind Martin's desk, and the decorative wooden box
that was behind Martin's desk moved with the wooden file cabinet to between
the windows.  The White Buddha and the Banker's lamp remained.

Back Right Corner
.
The back right corner is usually a pretty dark corner in this room.  The area is sort
of an "inset" into the wall because of the fireplace to the right and the wall jutting
out above.  There is also a square nook high on the back wall that is usually even
darker and not easy to see - and sometimes contains something.  See the picture
at the right for a good look at the "inset" of the wall and the square nook (circled).

In S1 there was a large wooden cabinet with Art Deco style glass doors.  It never
appeared that there was anything but books inside.  It's actually the only thing
that Martin kept from Dr Sim's furnishings, but it disappeared after S1.
.
.
Series 1
.
.
.
There is a new piece of furniture in the corner.  It's a large, beautiful wooden
secretary with divided shelves on top.  The secretary stays closed for the entire
series, but there are a number of objects on top, including the White Buddha, a
mantel clock, a small fabric covered Asian box, a black tumbler with silver ring, the
shorter of the two small Buddhas, and a few books.

You can see in the nook that there is a large piece of pottery - possibly the same
piece that we could barely see in S1.
.
.
Series 2
.
.
.
The same wooden cabinet is in the corner, but more items have been added to the
top.  The large Asian chest is still there, but the Bonsai is gone.  Added is the
mantel clock that we saw in the front right corner of the Living Room in Series 1.
A second black tumbler has been added and the ornate wooden clock that
was between the two back windows in S2 has been moved here.

In Episode 3, the two black tumblers were moved to the window in the front right
corner, and in that place were a small green and white ceramic vase (or bottle?)
and a couple of round red covered boxes.
.
.
Series 3
.
.
.
.
The same wooden cabinet remains, but the top has been cleared and now has the
large, very ornate Asian box that was on the mantel in S2 & S3, and three Asian
warrior figurines.  It's very difficult to see, but I think inside the nook is now a
slimmer piece of pottery - possibly a bottle of some sort?
.
.
Series 4
.
.
.
.
This corner changed considerably when Dr Dibbss moved in.  She brought in a tall
wooden secretary that stays there through S7.  In the first episode, she keeps the
secretary closed, but when Martin takes over in Episode 2 he opens it up and it
remains open.  On top is a rectangular painting leaning against the back wall,
a turquoise vase, the green glass Banker's lamp we've seen before, and a plain
wooden box.  After Martin takes over, he moves the lamp down to the writing
surface of the secretary, but leaves the other objects on top - although they do
change places at times.  He adds several items to the shelves in the open
secretary, although the only thing recognizable is the shorter of the small Buddhas.

For the first time, a picture has been added to the wall in the corner - a painting of
a dog.  There is a very similar dog painting in the Waiting Room next to the
receptionist's desk - both probably brought in by Dr Dibb.  Both paintings
remain there through S7.  In the nook there appear to be a couple of books and
possibly a vase or canister?
.
.
Series 5
.
.
.
.
.
.
In this series, all of the items, with the exception of the rectangular painting, are
gone from the top of the secretary.  For the first 3 episodes it is open, but there
are not many good shots to see what remains inside.  Starting in Episode 4 it is
shut again and even the painting is gone from the top.  We do see it open again
one more time in Episode 7.
.
.
Series 6
.
.
.
The secretary is open again and remains that way for the entire series.  On top is
what appears to be a vase, but next to it is something really exciting!  In the first
3 series, Martin had a large, beautiful decorative Asian chest sitting on his desk.
It was gone in Series 4 and we never saw it again.  But it reappeared in Series 7
on top of the secretary.  Because it was so dark in that corner in every shot, it
wasn't immediately recognizable.  But I've included a closeup of the chest when
it was sitting on the desk and it is absolutely the same piece.
.

Series 7
.

.
.
It appears that there is
something in the nook - you
can see a little bit of
reflection.
.
.
.
.
For the Christmas Special between S2 & S3, there is a new piece - a large carved
wooden chest.  We never see this chest open and it will remain there all the way
through S4.  In fact, it's the piece that the movers bump into the doorway as they
are moving it out in S4E8 when Martin is moving to London.

On top is the large Asian chest that sat behind Martin's desk all through S2, plus a
Bonsai tree.  There is also a Bonsai tree on the mantel, but this is the only
episode where they appear.

Right Wall
.
The right wall is dominated by a fireplace that has a black stove installed.  We've
never seen anyone fiddle with the stove, but we have to assume it is meant to be
used in the winter - although there is a radiator on the back wall.  The mantel is
used every series to display various items.  On the wall above the mantel were 2
matching paintings from Series 1 through Series 4.  In Series 5, Dr Dibbs replaced
them with a large floral painting - and it has remained there through Series 7.

There were a series of different wooden chairs just to the right of the fireplace
for the first few series, and later they were replaced by a small wooden table.

In Series 1 there is a large black decorated Asian box in the middle of the mantel,
and to the right what appears to be a black fabric covered Asian box.  On the wall
above are two matching red framed pictures (there is a similarly framed one on
the wall next to the door).  These two pictures appear to be floral arrangements,
but I think they almost look like overfilled woks sitting on top of a gas range.
.
.
Series 1
.
.
.
For this series the decorative black box was moved to behind Martin's desk.  Now
in the middle of the mantel is an even larger decorative Asian box.  It is wooden
with large silver accents and four round green (possibly glass?) pieces attached
to the front.  Just to the left is a tall ceramic pagoda, to the right is the taller of the
two small Buddhas that were in the kitchen in S1.  On the extreme left and right of
the mantel are a pair of matching tall, thin metal lamps with small white pleated
shades.  A tall back wooden chair sat to the right of the fireplace.
.
.
Series 2
.
.
.
For Series 3 the large wood and silver box remains in the center of the mantel.  In
place of the pair of lamps, there is now a single tall thin black lamp with a small
black shade on the right edge of the mantel.  The tall pagoda has been moved to
the right side and the small Buddha has moved back to the kitchen - and will move
back and forth between the kitchen and another area of the Consulting Room
during this series.  The Gold Buddha is now sitting on the left  side of the mantel.
There is now a smaller wooden chair with a rattan seat to the right of the mantel.
The orientation of the two pictures above remain the same as in S2.
.
.
Series 3
.
.
.
.
The items on the mantel are completely changed this series - as has just about
everything in the Consulting Room.  In the middle is an antique barograph
(barometer).  On the left are a large metal warrior statue, some type of metal 3
legged cup or pitcher, a metal mortar and pestle, and 3 books.  On the right
appears to be a small Asian fabric covered box with the shorter of the two small
Buddhas on top.  There is also a small head-only Buddha statue that starts out on
Martin's desk but moves to the far right side of the mantel in Episode 4.  To the
right of the mantel is a new wooden chair with rattan seat - very similar to the one
from the previous series.
.
.
Series 4
.
.
.
Again, just about everything changed when Dr Dibbs took over the surgery.  One
thing that remained for some reason was the antique barograph.  Dr Dibbs placed
a light green footed glass dish on the left and a small covered blue and brown
glass dish on the right, with a short wooden lamp with red shade at the far right.
The major change to this wall was that the two red paintings were gone and
replaced by a single large painting of a cup of flowers.  The chair to the right of
the fireplace was replaced by the splayed leg wooden table that had been on the
back wall.  What looks like a radio was at the back of the table and in front was a
kidney dish - later replaced by a black leather case of some sort.
.
.
Series 5
.
.
.
.
.
.
There was only one change made in this series.  The green glass dish on the left
disappeared and was replaced by a small wooden box (from atop the tall secretary
in Series 5).  The table to the right still held the item that might be a radio.  But in
different episodes it also held the black leather case, a turquoise vase, or nothing
but the radio.
.
.
Series 6
.
.
.
A few changes this series.  The lamp remained on the left and the antique
barograph was still in the center.  A square Art Deco style clock was added to the
left of the barograph and on the right was what appeared to be a covered tin box
and then the wooden box that was on the left side for most of S6.  The small
splayed leg table was still there - but moved from side to side (see below).

Series 7

.

.
.
.
.
For the Christmas Special between S2 &
S3, the lamps and the small Buddha are
gone.  On the left side is the White Buddha
that was in the back right corner in S2.  On
the right is a Bonasi tree.  And the Gold
Buddha has been brought back from the
Living Room and is sitting right in the
middle atop the decorative box.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
There was one small change for one scene in
Episode 3.  When the little redhaired boy was
creating havoc in the Consulting Room, a small
brown and red ceramic bowl appeared on the
left side of the mantel.  As Martin grabbed the
boy by the arm to set him back in his seat, you
could see the bowl next to the tall pagoda.
The shot changed angles and the pagoda
disappeared.  Then the boy got back up and
smashed the bowl on the floor.  The bowl was
apparently only added to that scene to be
destroyed, but not sure about why the pagoda
disappeared - it was back again the next time
we had a shot of the mantel.
.
.
.

Although the two pictures above the mantel
stayed the same from S1 to S2, they were
swapped from left to right.  See the two shots

The pictures above the mantel were playing games

were still in the same location as in Episode 1, but
halfway through the episode they flipped again and
remained that way the rest of the series.

In Episode 7, when Louisa brought the tray of breakfast in to Martin, the

and the wooden box was gone.  Of course, the clock was still there at the
beginning of Episode 8, but was later taken by his mother.
.
In episodes 1 and 2 the small splayed leg table was on the right side of the fireplace with just a box of tissues on
top.  In  Episode 3 it moved over to the left side of the fireplace and stayed there through Episode 5, now with a
couple of books (not always the same ones) on top.  In Episode 6, the table with just books on top moved back to the
right of the fireplace and stayed there through Episode 8.

Front Right Corner
.
This corner is just to the right of the fireplace.  It contains the exam couch and
there is a small square window high on the wall.  The exam couch is against the
front wall in Series 1, but moves over to the left starting in Series 2 and then
there is usually some piece of furniture in the corner.

In Series 1, there are two black tumblers with metal rings at the top sitting in the
window.  Also, notice that the exam couch has a base that matches the cabinets
along the left wall.  There is a wood and leather chair sitting next to the
exam couch.
.
.
Series 1
.
.
For Series 2, a few feet of space had been added to the side walls in this area of
the room, so the exam table was permanently moved from being against the front
wall over to the left so that it was almost to the fireplace.  A hanging light
(identical to the ones either side of the door) was added above the exam table.
Starting this series, there would always be some type of stand or piece of
furniture in this corner, often holding the articulated exam lamp.  For this series,
it was a drop leaf wooden and metal rolling stand.

The two black tumblers remained in the window, joined by a small wooden box.

For Series 3, a splayed leg wooden table is now in the corner and on top is the
wooden box from the window in Series 2, one of the small Buddhas, a brown bowl
with red interior, and some type of blue box (pretty sure it's a blood pressure
monitor like the orange one we usually see).  There is nothing in the window.

In Episode 3, a lot of furniture is moved around the room and the table has been
moved over to the Back Left Corner.  In its place is a new wooden stand.  It still
contains the wooden box and the blue box, but the small Buddha has been moved
into the kitchen.  In the window now the two black tumblers have returned and are
joined by the brown bowl.  The objects in the window move around from
episode to episode.

A new piece of furniture is in place for this series - a wood and glass supply
cabinet.  The only ornament is the brown bowl from the last series.  In Episode 1 it
is on top of the cabinet, in Episode 2 it's in the window, in Episode 3 it's back on
the cabinet.  Then in Episode 4 it disappears and both the window and the cabinet
are bare for the rest of Series 4.

Series 4

Again, lots of changes in this corner when Dr Dibbs took over the surgery.  There
is a new exam couch - notice the before and after below showing the original one
with the stainless base and the new one that is open underneath.  The new one
had a paper roller at the foot, but that was removed starting in Episode 3 and
never returned.  It makes sense because many patients sat at the end of the
couch while being examined.  In the corner now is a rolling supply cart with the
exam light on top.  There is a narrower, taller one near the door, and in Episode 5
the two carts were swapped.  This shorter, wider cart is the one that Martin uses
often all over the room, so when not in use it sits by the door.

A large light blue glass vase now sits in the window.

Everything is in the same place this series.  The only addition is the two black
tumblers are back and sitting on the bottom shelf of the cart in the corner,

Again, no real changes in this area except that the two black tumblers are gone
again.  In the first few episodes the exam couch and the tall cart from the corner
are moved around a little bit.  By Episode 5 the two pieces are back in their usual
places and stay there the rest of the series.

The only change for the Christmas Special was
that a different, footed, wooden box showed up
in the window.  This box can be seen in many
other areas of this room in subsequent series.

In this series they occasionally moved things around.  Most of the time only
Martin's medical bag sat against the wall.  A couple of times the step stool was
moved there temporarily from the left wall.  One time his rolling exam chair was
there.  In the scene where Louisa helps Martin hop into the room, the wooden
chair has been moved over from the other side of the door to make room for the
ultrasound machine.  The one addition this series is a wall mounted hand sanitizer.
(There's an identical one in the Waiting Room next to Morwenna's desk.)

It appears to be a new silver trash
receptacle sitting next to the step stool.
In this series, the antique barometer that has been on the mantel since Series 4
has now been moved here.  It is in the middle of the dresser top with the Gold
Buddha (no base) on the right and a stack of papers on the left.  At the beginning
of Episode 1 the papers are just stacked there, but partway through the episode
they have been placed into a black tray and they remain that way the rest of the
Series.  There is also a new black task lamp behind the Buddha.  The red framed
painting is gone again and replaced by Dr Dibbs' pastoral painting that was there
in Series 5.

In Episode 4 the Buddha disappears, but we find that it has been moved to the
back right corner on top of the tall secretary.
.
.
.
In Episode 3, a scene in this room began with a sweeping shot of the room from behind this wall.  It was the first time
we've seen this angle - looking through the glass of the barometer and the back of the Buddha.
.

There are no changes in this corner from the end of Series 7.  No table in the
corner and the small sketch remains on the wall.

There is a different wooden table now below the left window.  It is the one that was
between the windows at the beginning of Series 3 and in the back left corner in
Series 5 (and in the Living Room in Series 6).  On top appears to be a printer and a
black tray containing paper.

The small secretary has been between the windows since Series 5.  On top of the
secretary is the silver Banker's lamp that was moved from the large secretary in
the corner.  Next to it are the amber pitcher and glass from the previous series,
but all series long the glasses change, with another amber glass or a light green
glass or glasses being added at times.

There is a new small round wooden table under the right window that holds a few
old books. Also under that window the wooden arm chair with the leather seat
remains and they have added a striped pillow as a backrest.

The tall secretary remains in the corner - as it has since Series 5.  The Banker's
lamp is gone as it has moved over to the back wall between the windows.
Martin's grandfather's clock is now back in the surgery and sits on the open
secretary.  The large decorative Asian chest is still on top and for the first 3
episodes is the only item on the top.

In Episode 2, the clock front is open, but it's closed again in Episode 3.  In
Episode 4 the clock disappears and is not seen again for the rest of the series.

Also in Episode 4,  the Golden Buddha disappears from behind Martin's desk and
it appears on the top of the secretary to the left of the Asian chest.  It remains
there the rest of the series.

The odd dog painting remains on the wall in the corner and in the nook is one of
the small Buddhas!  We haven't seen either of them since Series 5.

We see Martin working at the open secretary in Episode 5 and in Episode 7 it is
closed for the only time this series.

The items on and around the mantel stayed unchanged all through Series 8.  The
wooden lamp with the red shade, the floral painting, and the wooden splayed leg
table have all been there since Series 5.  Across the mantel we saw the wooden
lamp, a pair of books lying on their sides, a small mantel clock we've not seen
before, some type of turned wooden dowel ornament, and several books held in
place by metal (pewter?) bookends that appear to be some type of animal (turtles?)

On the wooden table to the right of the fireplace is a small wooden box that was
on top of the tall secretary in Series 5 and was on the mantel in Series 6 & 7.

Front Wall
.
The front wall of this room is the area to the left of the door.  There are only a
couple of features of note:  there is always a painting on the wall, there sometimes
is a metal trash receptacle, sometimes a scale, and, right next to the door is the
spot where he usually keeps his rolling cart when not in use.

One interesting thing about that wall.  In Series 4 (and only Series 4) it was
wallpapered.  It wasn't all that noticeable because it was the same color as the
wall.  Click on the picture to the left to see the Series 4 wallpaper

In Series 1 there was one of the red framed paintings on the wall, matching the
two above the mantel.  The rolling cart sat next to the door with an eye chart on
the wall above it.  In this series the exam couch was up against the wall and there
was a tall exam light that only appeared in Series 1.  Starting in Series 2 it was
replaced by a tabletop articulated style that usually sat on a table in the corner.
.
.
Series 1
.
.
In Series 2 the exam couch moved away from the wall.  The red framed painting
remained on the wall, but the eye chart was missing - never to return.  A hanging
light was installed next to the door.  This was one of three identical lights installed
at the beginning of Series 2 - one on either side of the door and one on the right
wall over the exam couch.  A mysterious box was added to the wall next to the
door, painted to match the wall.  We've never seen it used or any reference to it.

There was a white metal trash receptacle against the wall and the rolling cart was
parked next to the door most of the time.

Series 2

Not much new in this series.  The only change is that there is a different white
metal trash receptacle.  This one has different legs than the one from Series 2.
.
.
Series 3
.
.
.
This was the series that they inexplicably wallpapered the upper half of this wall.
The only other change was the addition of a radiator on the wall.  Several of the
rooms in the surgery had radiators added in Series 4.  Perhaps it was an
unusually cold spring there?
.
.
Series 4
.
.
.
Series 5 saw many changes in this room with Dr Dibbs moving in.  There is a new
painting on the wall - a pastoral scene that is similar in style to the new one behind
the desk.  A new rolling cart that is taller and with a smaller surface area is sitting
against the wall.  In the corner is another rolling cart that is similar to the one that
has always been next to the door.  In Episode 5 the two carts are swapped out so
that the shorter one that Martin uses in different areas of the room is easy to reach
next to the door.  Dr Dibbs has also brought in a pair of wooden chairs and one is
often against this wall.  The trash receptacle is gone and a scale is against the wall.

Notice the blue blood pressure monitor now instead of the orange one.  The
orange one will still be seen on occasion.

Series 6

In the first few episodes the exam couch and cart with the exam light move around
a little bit.  The wooden chair is back against the wall.  There is a new stainless
steel trash receptacle.  The scale is against the wall in Episode 1, but it moves
over to under the window for the rest of the series.

Desk Area
.
The desk that Martin brings to Portwenn is very modern and looks like a desk that
belongs in London.  It has chrome legs and trim and a wooden top painted black.
If you look closely at some of the pictures you can see the grain in the wood.
There only appears to be one drawer on the right side, but it's possible there is a
matching one on the left.

Below are some pictures of the desk and the items on the desk.  There is a large,
beautiful Asian chest in one corner.  At the beginning of Series 4 it disappears and
it reappears in Series 7 on top of the tall secretary in the back right corner.

When Dr Dibbs came to the Surgery she brought this wooden desk - Martin's
modern desk was on its way to London.  For all of Series 5, Martin kept the
Consulting Room pretty much as Dr Dibbs left it.  He made some changes as time
went on, but he kept the wooden desk.  I think that this desk fits better into
Portwenn and all of the additional drawer space makes it a more practical option.
