For Series 1, the kitchen scenes were filmed in a cottage somewhere in Port Isaac. Before the filming of
Series 2, a kitchen set was built in the barn at Roscarrock Farm.  They really did a nice job duplicating
the kitchen used in Series 1, but there were differences.

This page was developed to show you the differences in the kitchen they used for Series 1 and the set
that they built.  I really have to hand it to the set designers that they were able to get the same feel
when designing the new kitchen.  I know a lot of viewers had no idea that there was a different kitchen
in Series 2.  A few people have said they thought it looked a bit different but couldn't place why.

Here is an approximation of the layouts of the old and new kitchens:
.
.
Series 1

Note that the kitchen
table is almost against
the far wall. Also note
that there are two steps
down from the hallway.

Starting in Series 2 the
hallway changes and
then there is a step UP
to the kitchen.
.
.
Series 1

Pulling back in this shot,
the table is now right
against the wall.

You can see in the
foreground that there is
a counter on this side of
the kitchen with a wall
behind it. This counter is
right across from the
back door, but much
closer to the door than
the hutch that we see in
subsequent series.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Series 1

Shot taken from the the
side of the kitchen.  You
can see the counter
opposite the back door
and a sliver of the wall
(the wall the counter is
against) at the left edge
of the picture.
.
.
Series 1

In this shot, notice that
there is a window on the
wall at the right.  This is
actually where the living
room should be.

In the Pilot episode there
is a bit of curtain on the
window and you can see
greenery outside.
.
.
Series 1

Starting with S1E2 there
is a blind on the window.
.
.
Series 1

Another shot of the
window at night.
.
.
Series 2

Starting in S2 that wall is
opened up to the living
room and the kitchen
table is moved to the
center of the room.
.
.
Series 1

Looking at this picture
again, notice the door to
the pantry behind Martin.

It is a solid door in this
series rather than the
glass paned door they
used when the built the
new kitchen set.

Also, it is very close to
that counter on the left -
there wouldn't be a lot of
room between the
counter and the pantry
door.
.
.
Series 4

Compare to this view of
the new set where there
is a lot more room
between the pantry door
and the hutch.
.
.
Series 1

Take a look again at the
hallway leading out of
the kitchen.  Notice the
two stairs leading UP to
the hallway.
.
.
Series 1

And also, notice this view
from a different angle
that there is a wall there
once you go up the two
steps to the hallway.
.
.
Series 1

In this shot, Martin has
just walked out of the
kitchen with the box  it
looks like you make a
slight jog to the right as
you leave the kitchen
and then left into the
hallway.
.
.
Series 1

Martin is now entering
the consulting room and
you see one of the
movers carrying another
box but continuing down
that other hallway.

I suspect he is heading
to the living room and
that the round window is
supposed to be part of a
courtyard between the
kitchen and living room.

On the new set the
kitchen opens right up to
the living room.
.
.
Series 4

Now, in the new set that
was built for S2 we see
the same hallway but it
doesn't jog over to the
right and opens up right
to the kitchen.
.
.
Series 4

In this shot you can now
see the step that goes
DOWN to the hallway
rather than up.

And there is now a lovely
door that can be closed
to give more privacy to
the kitchen.
.
.
Series 2

Another shot of the new
hallway.  You can see
the door at the other end
of the hall.  That door
has only been used
twice. Once by Martin in
S2 and once by Aunt
Ruth in S6.
.
.
Series 1

Looking at the kitchen
windows across the back
of the kitchen.

In S1 they are quite
different from the ones
built in the set.  There is
also a much wider gap
between them.
.
.
Series 1

Also, note how deep set
the windows are in S1
.
.
Series 2

When the set was built
they tried to duplicate it
as best they could, but
those deep set windows
would require much
thicker walls than they
probably wanted to deal
with on the set.
.
.
Series 1

Let's look at the back
wall of the kitchen.  First
there is a small wooden
cupboard, then it looks
like a fridge, a set of
wooden drawers under
the window and the stove
between the windows.
.
.
Series 1

Then the sink
underneath the other
window, followed by what
looks like a dishwasher
and then another cabinet.
.
.
Series 1

At the far end is a tall
wooden cabinet.  You
can see Martin taking a
drinking glass from the
cabinet.
.
.
Series 2

On the new set you can
see that the fridge is
gone (we will later see
that it has been moved
to the pantry).  There is
an open cupboard and a
cupboard door.

The sink has been
moved to under the
other window, there is
now a cupboard between
the windows, and the
stove has been moved to
under the window on the
right.  At the far right are
additional cupboards.
.
.
Series 1

Now let's take a look at
the ceiling.

In S1 it was a normal
looking ceiling with open
rafters.
.
.
Series 1

On the new set the
ceiling becomes a
vaulted ceiling with a
large skylight.
.
.
Series 6

This shot gives you an
idea of the vaulted
ceiling in the kitchen.
.
.
Series 1

Looking at the back
door, this is the door in
S1.  Painted blue with
clear glass panes.
.
.
Series 3

On the new set they
installed a wooden dutch
door with a small bottled
glass window.

We see the top of the
door open in one
episode.
.
.
Series 1

In S1 the pantry door is a
solid wooden door,
.
.
Series 3

On the new set it is a
panel door with 4 glass
panes.
