This is one of the defining episodes of all the series…one that all true fans of DM know well, if for no other reason than it contains one of the best kiss scenes of all episodes.

During this episode, Louisa reaches the conclusion that Danny Steele is not the man for her. If this scene were being played in front of a theater audience, I can almost hear the cheers from the crowd as Louisa tells him good-bye.

So, then, Louisa takes another bold step, spending the evening drinking wine with Martin in order to “see the real you”. Unfortunately, for both Louisa and the viewers, the evening does not work out as expected. I find this episode leaves me with a variety of emotions. I am happy to see Danny out of the picture and pleased that things are looking up for M & L. However, I did not care for all of the joking about Martin waking up with the dog. I realize it is intended as humor, but I dislike practical jokes and find it uncomfortable watching Pauline, Bert and the other villagers making fun of the Doc.

And of course the final scene, although beautifully photographed with the bright blue harbor as a backdrop, ends terribly for the twosome. It had not occurred to me until this re-watch of how this scene and the situation with Mark and Julie is likely connected. The Doc uncovered the fact that Julie had ulterior motives for pursuing Mark. Now, is he wondering whether Louisa has ulterior motives? As insecure as Martin is in social situations and likely wondering how anyone as pretty as Louisa could possibly want him, it is easy for him to fall back on his medical training and apply a medical explanation to the situation. He has already been the object of ridicule; he wouldn’t want to appear a fool to find Louisa wasn’t sincere.

As Kate mentioned in the review of another episode, when I re-watched this one with closed captioning, I picked up something I had missed before. As Doc is talking with Mark after examining Julie, Mark says: “She’s a crook, a grifter. She’s driven a horse and cart through my life.” I had not previously understood what Martin says after that, but now I know he is correcting Mark’s statement by saying “Coach and horses.” I had not picked up on it before as it was a phrase with which I was not familiar. It seems I am still learning the English language.

The idea of Martin wondering if Louisa was after him for other reasons is something I never thought about Sue. You might be right – it could be tied to Mark’s storyline.

On the “coach and horses” line – I caught that too. Just another instance of Martin being a little condescending toward Mark, right after Mark called him on it. But Mark took it well and I don’t think Martin could help it. It’s like how I’ve always corrected spoken grammar to young people I know well – I just can’t help myself sometimes. 😏

This is my all time favorite #1 episode of all Doc Martin episodes. There is so much happening during this episode that I always love a rewatch of Erotomania, and Doc and Louisa are involved in every story thread. Danny proposes to Louisa and you can see she didn’t expect that. We have seen Louisa’s looks and her interactions toward Doc in past episodes which makes us know she still has feelings for Doc. And when Louisa announces to Doc that “he’s gone”, I felt she understood that Doc was avoiding her because of Danny.

The Salvation Army man is trying to track down a missing person. Doc gets into the middle of all this because of Julie being pregnant but Mark finding out he has zero sperm. Very clever how it is all revealed and sorted and it was Louisa that brought it to Docs attention that Julie was the missing person. It is also Louisa that finally helps Mrs. Tishell take her neck collar off only to then have to call Doc to help her. I think Mrs. Tishell liked those lovely big hands holding her neck steady.

I love how the drinking scene opens on the Doc and Louisa through the hallway door, each mirroring eachothers position across the table. That whole scene to the kiss is a heart melter. The rest of the episode makes me laugh out loud. The physical comedy is outstanding. This may be the only episode Louisa actually says “I love you” to Doc…until series 7?

We’ve always talked about all the fairy tale references in this series – even though MC and PB always insist it’s NOT a fairy tale. But this time I noticed another reference. At the very beginning of the episode when Martin is walking into the chemist, Mrs Tishell is nattering away to her customer and mentions “The Princess and the Pea”.

Mrs T baked Martin a cake and brought it to him in a round tin – just like Melanie did. Of course, it was Mark who explained that if you accept a girl’s cake it means you are engaged. So, to complete that circle, Mrs T was carrying the tin with the cake (on her way to the surgery) when she bumped into Mark who was in a hurry to get his, um, sample to the hospital.

Martin has a strange pronunciation of “cervical collar”. At least to my ear.

People have chastised Louisa for the way she treated Danny when he accepted the job in London and she broke up with him. But watching this time I paid close attention to their conversation on the Platt when she brought up the time when they dated previously. They talked about how the reason they split up was he was too interested in his career, but he says he’s changed now. They’re interrupted in the middle of this important conversation when she’s just said that she’s not saying no, but… and his phone rings and he has to leave to take the call because it’s work. Yeah. And, of course, later when he wants Louisa to pick up and go to London with him, again for work, it completely contradicts what he earlier said about not being ruled by his career.

Two rough scenes in a row for Martin. The scene with Martin, Louisa and the guy from the Salvation Army has always been a favorite of mine because Martin is so heartbroken. And that’s followed right up with Mark giving him a lecture about how Martin has no one in his life, that he wouldn’t know a good relationship if it came up and bit him on his nose, and how he has snubbed Mark.

And then of course, Martin HAS to correct Mark, “Coach and horses.”

What is wrong with Mrs T? Twice she refuses to let Martin examine her – but she later finds how nice it can be when he has his hands around her neck in the shop while they wait for the ambulance. And he says, “Take it off” and she refuses. I always have a giggle at that line.

Louisa had an electric tooth brush all the way back then. We don’t see Martin using one until S7.
