SueThis episode has one of my favorite scenes. After Martin returns to the surgery after rescuing Mark, he finally gets a good idea of how much Louisa may care for him when she tells him that she was worried about him. Naturally, a moment when they might have connected a bit is destroyed as Stewart interrupts to inform the Doc he is dripping blood all over his floor.
Another good scene was when Louisa confronts Martin in the surgery and chastises him for being rude to Mark in declining his request to be his best man. Poor Martin, he hardly has a clue of what Louisa is going on about. At the conclusion of the scene, however, the viewer can almost find himself arguing in Martin’s defense of disregarding the trivial to concentrate on things that are important. This is emphasized when Louisa, after nattering on about Martin upsetting Mark for a social offense, almost as an aside, thanks Martin for saving Danny’s life.
If viewers hadn’t previously been aware of how committed the Doc is to caring for his patients, regardless of how idiotic their actions, this episode was the perfect example. Martin couldn’t have worked any harder than he did to find Mark in the woods and save him. It also is apparent that Al, though often insecure with himself, is one of the few competent villagers.
I laugh out loud at the scene with Martin and Stewart getting caught repeatedly in the poachers’ trap. It is nearly Three Stooges slapstick comedy, but they carry it off so well that I find it to be a great moment.
Pauline has some funny lines well-delivered in this episode too.
When Doc is helping Louisa put up the banners for the school fete, Pauline says: “Always knew you had that community spirit deep down in you, Doc,…very deep down.”And as the women are awaiting news of what is happening in the woods:
Julie: “Well, I hope I don’t have to cancel the wedding. The church is booked and everything.”
Pauline: “If you’re worried about your deposit, you can always switch to a funeral.”As usual, there are numerous lovely views of Cornwall countryside…this time some beyond Port Isaac.

It’s only been a few episodes since Al and Bert were agonizing over whether Bert was really Al’s father, and now Al is moving out and Bert will be alone for the first time in his life. You can see that it’s really bothering him.
The painting of the church done by the four year old (Martin thinks it’s a horse) looks a lot like the closest church to Port Isaac – St Endellion.
The main story is the bachelor party in the woods – which was supposed to have more than just the two men. But it’s interesting that this is the only episode where the “Greek Chorus” is teenage boys instead of teenage girls. I just put those two things together on this viewing – couldn’t be a coincidence.
Poor Mark, wondering if Julie felt anything when he got bit by the snake. If only he knew how well she’s taking all this.
I had the closed captioning on while watching. There are always some interesting mistakes, but when Mark drives up to Martin walking by the Platt and asks him to the bachelor party, Martin says, “Mark” as he walks up to him, but the closed captioning is, “Arthur”. Do the people doing this not pay ANY attention?

SueGreat observation about the male Greek chorus. I had not picked up on that, but I am sure you are correct that it is not a coincidence.

This episode did strike me as all about the men (and boys) of Portwenn but I didn’t pick up on the male greek chorus. You just blew my mind, Kate Kennedy. We have the boys playing tough with the weavers, we have Mark and Al off for a stag camp out…who does a stag camp out? Al moving into his first place and it seems like a manly thing to do because it is a fixer upper. The Doc is acting the gentleman helper for the school fair set up and then he and Stewart are off to the woods to rescue Mark. A very good episode to lead into the season closer.
