SueThis is such a sad episode, hearing how Martin’s parents treat him and learning how his mother has never wanted him. At least we now have some understanding of why his personality has developed as it has. What is the saddest of all is after Margaret has told him “40 years of my life wasted because of you”, Martin says “sorry”. He actually apologizes for something that is not his fault.
Roger Fenn unwittingly rubs salt in the wound by stating that being a parent is the most wonderful thing in the world, when Roger learns he and Maureen will soon be parents of twins.
Poor Martin must be so discouraged by the end of this episode. Not only do his parents not want him, but his Aunty Joan, the only person who feels like family to him, sends him away, assuming he is in collusion with his awful parents.
Then, to add insult to injury, Louisa heatedly rejects him despite his heroic efforts in saving Danny’s life.
Somehow, he keeps going, concentrating on his medical duties. Perhaps the writers intend to convey Martin’s philosophy through the final scene where the teenagers rush to seek his help for their friend who has decided to remove her own mole herself.
The girls ask: “Is she going to die?”
Martin: “Yep, but not today, though.” -
Carole VoltzI agree with you Sue, this is such a sad episode when we get our first exposure to DM’ s parents. They are so vile with his father’s cutting words and his mother’s coldness toward Martin. When I watched the scene in the kitchen, where she spewed her venom at him, I reacted viscerally. I was sick to my stomach. Her hatred was so intense but delivered in such a cold cruel manner it gives credit to the talent of Clare Bloom. Martin’s reaction stunned me. I have only been able to rewatch this episode once. Even the knowledge of what’s to come doesn’t temper the viewing. This was the episode that made me realize that Doc Martin was something special. I wasn’t expecting a TV show to generate such a strong reaction in me. I had a different perspective from then on as I watched.
The juxtaposition of Roger Tenn’ s news to Martin’s is well played. Two men of a similar age and temperament experienced polar opposites regarding parents. The pathos was deftly handled without devolving into melodrama.
This episode allows the viewers more knowledge of DM’ s background but no one else in the village learns it.
I will always find it difficult to watch this episode. -

Right on, Sue and Carole. When he was picking his parents up at the Depot without a wave, smile or hug of greeting and then reminding his dad they hadn’t spoken in 7 years, you knew this was going to be a dramatic episode. His mother was so cruel saying 40 years of her life was wasted because of him. I feel so crushed for Doc Watching this episode.
On top of his parents disrupting his world, Doc has to listen to Danny wanting to make another go at Louisa and telling Doc they have a history. I see the Doc distancing himself from Louisa on purpose now.
There was one moment where the Doc actually smiled! When Roger tells him that Maureen is having twins, Doc smiled. I hadn’t noticed that before.

SueCarole, I agree with you on the reaction that this episode evokes in me. As with you, it is an episode that I seldom re-watch because I know what is to come and don’t like it. As you said, it must speak well of the performance of all the actors.
