I am far behind with the rewatch, but I decided to restart with the current one. I’ll rewatch the others later.

This episode is the one I always call the Spooky old bat episode. One of my favourites. My most favourite scene is the kiss on the terrace. Martin looks so sweet and gentle. Every inch a gentleman.

Suffering of asthma myself, I always asked myself questions about the inhaler Martin borrows from the other restaurant guest. In my opinion that poor guy must have had the aspergilosis problem too. Martin gave him the inhaler back, after Dave -contaminated with the fungus – used the inhaler. Looks like a source of spores to me! Bert and Mick got sick, but we don’t see the other one in the surgery. By the way, Martin got pretty exposed to it himself, when he went in the cellar. Must have been the Portwenn effect.

Funny to see that Pauline makes a remark about the AA, but apperently found a newcaddiction, since she could hardly stop with the pacmanlike game when Dave collapsed in the surgery.

Beth is such a lovely person, but Janet also played her role very well.

Loved to watch it again.

This one of the episodes I hadn’t seen very often yet an I don’t know why, since it’s very good.

Pauline and Martin are very good at pretending the bad smell of Freddy’s owner. I could nearly smell it as well.

It stroke me that Louisa was rather snappy at Danny and didn’t want to be touched in the beginning, but after her talk with Martin (ending in a row once again), she suddenly became more interested in his avances from Danny.

When the three of them arrive at Caroline’s house and when Martin speaks about the insuline, Danny says practically the same thing as in the scene where Jake is found in a diabetic coma (S7e6): She’s not diabetic? Martin only reacts with a grunt.

Funny to see the terrace of the slipway and realizing that I’ve nearly been at the same table as Mark Mylow..

Not very important, but I love the scene where Martin snifs his coffee tin before making coffee. So “normal”. I do it when I make coffee.

Had a lot of fun with this rewatch!

One of the best episodes, packed with humour.

“I hope your ears aren’t burning…” I liked Louisa’s reaction. The scene proofs that she isn’t any better than the rest of the gossiping village.

The parrot in the pub is something I hadn’t really noticed before! So funny that he started to copy Martin when he said “Mark” and even repeated a medical term. Martin’s reaction was priceless! It became even better when the parrot says “Martin” when the doc leaves (or at least I think he does say that)

I love to see that the Doc is really interested in his patients and shows concern.

Again an episode where dogs play a role. Must have been a Portwenn effect as well, how on earth could the dog (chained most of the time) get hit by a car in the middle of nowhere?

Kate, I think these rewatches are great, makes me watch my favourite show with different eyes.. Thank you for organizing it!

I totally agree with Sue, this episodes is full of references that either look back to series 1, or come back in later series. Like Louisa’s statement about Martin not being completely normal. The poor guy, totally flabbergastered when Louisa stood up without finishing her coffee end left. He had a point though,thinking that she was trying to get an advantage on the other candidates. He probably had to deal with to many heal lickers in London, so he couldn’t imagine that Louisa’s speech was genuine.

I really liked the interview. Louisa mentions her strength, being a good listener, but she misinterprets as much situations as Martin does, simply because she doesn’t ask complementary questions. Instead of ecplaining her approach with the children, she justs lets him know thatshe will deal with the situation. Neither of them is a good listener in my opinion.

What stroke me really, was the fact that we see Danny in the beginning of the show, touching the dog and all. But no zoonosis is stated for him. Would that be a part that has been taken out of the episode because of lack of time, or would it be another example of discontinuity?

Roscarrock, doesn’t she simply refer to cleaning his face with a handkerchief after he had eaten chocolate? That’s what grown-ups do when children got all messy after eating an icecream or chocolate bar, isn’t it?

I really liked this episode. I remember so well that when I saw it for the first time, I immediately disliked Danny. Even if it became clear in later episodes, I felt that he wasn’t a man who cared about others ( not even his mother) but only thought about his own well being.. It struck me when I saw him again, how much younger the actor Tristan Sturrock was in S2 than in S7. Probably because of his health issue with his back.

Like most of you already mentioned, this episode was packed with humour. Like the dock evesdropping at the conversation between Pauline and Al, brilliant!

This episode has always been my favourite episode. One of the scenes I love the best is the one where Louisa gets back into the hospital to lecture Adrian Pitts. That’s one character I’d like to see back in series 8, to see how he developed. Maybe he learnt his lesson and developed into a brilliant surgeon. Very funny moment was when Adrian asks for a favour and where Martin says ‘He thinks you are an a…, I think you are an a… And finally, when Pitts goes away, he adds: a…
Martin shows his medical skills and even excuses for his bad behaviour in the morning, I liked that!
I liked the real interest Louisa showed in Martin’s story. Pitty that Martin ruined the moment in the taxi, but without that, we woulf have been stuck with only one episode.
Finally, I agree with Sue, what a stunning shot at the end. Clearly detected the ‘we want more’ feeling that hooked us to the series.

Nicely summarised, Sue. It’s one of my favourite episodes too. Both old ladies acted brilliantly and also the doc was great great (as always).

I realized lafter I had posted my review, that the Dutch version of this episode was the one that made me look for the original. We all know what happened with me afterwards (like for so many others, I got totally hooked). It meant also that I wasn’t surprised by his gift, because Dokter Tinus did just the same for his Lisa!

Sue, I agree with you on the sad ending. I think this is one of the episodes where Martin starts to doubt about himself and starts to think that he doesn’t deserve a beautiful woman like Louisa…

As for the “little prick”.. Those kind of lines are the ones that makes me love this show so much.

With respect to what you say about Louisa: she behaved like an opportunist. We would say here in the Netherlands: she danced to Danny’s piping.. The positive thing for Martin Ellingham was that he is never out of her mind (although Martin doesn’t know that..)

It WAS the Cronk’s house from series 7, ChazRose.

I always thought he binned the stuffed dog… Of course it doesn’t fit in the bin, so he places it next to where the bin is placed in other episodes.. By the way, I loved the final shot of the stuffed “watch”dog.. No sign of Gremlin at that time..

I agree, when an airbag deploys, the car has to be towed away.. But as Roscarock says, a nice example of the Portwenn effect.

I totally agree with you about the return of Peter Cronk in S7. That Peter was more likely to become a guy like Adrian Pitts than a good doctor. I was pleased with the way Morwenna treated him. Nice rivalery between them.

I think asthma can indeed become worse in situations of stress, Biffpup. At least it’s what I experience myself. I only suffer from light asthma, but I suffer more from it when stressed.

And yes, the interviews were very funny!

About the fish fingers you are right, it would have been much healthier for Peter to have the fresh fish, but it showed that he cared for the boy and make him feel comfortable in an anyhow stressful situation for a nine or ten year old (away from home, mom in hospital etc.). I found it sweet of him to do it.
