This one of the episodes I hadn’t seen very often yet an I don’t know why, since it’s very good.
Pauline and Martin are very good at pretending the bad smell of Freddy’s owner. I could nearly smell it as well.
It stroke me that Louisa was rather snappy at Danny and didn’t want to be touched in the beginning, but after her talk with Martin (ending in a row once again), she suddenly became more interested in his avances from Danny.
When the three of them arrive at Caroline’s house and when Martin speaks about the insuline, Danny says practically the same thing as in the scene where Jake is found in a diabetic coma (S7e6): She’s not diabetic? Martin only reacts with a grunt.
Funny to see the terrace of the slipway and realizing that I’ve nearly been at the same table as Mark Mylow..
Not very important, but I love the scene where Martin snifs his coffee tin before making coffee. So “normal”. I do it when I make coffee.
Had a lot of fun with this rewatch!

SueI find this to be one of my less preferred episodes. The scenes with Mr. Cooke are not so appealing, especially when the contents of his bag are finally revealed. I felt like I could actually smell what the characters were smelling. Apparently, the actor did an effective job though, because when I saw him later in a small role in an episode of Foyle’s War, I found myself still visualizing him as Mr. Cooke.
Someone else has pointed out that the tune that Mr. Cooke tries to hum, saying that his finch Freddie knew it, was the show’s theme song. Although I don’t doubt it, my ear couldn’t make it out.
I found myself being disappointed in Louisa as she felt it necessary to defend herself to Danny, saying that the kiss with Martin wasn’t anything… “just a moment”. Though she wouldn’t admit it, at least she had the Doc on her mind, since she immediately assumed that Danny was referring to Martin Ellingham rather than Martin Ferry of their childhood.
One of the best lines of the episodes I interpreted as a double entendre. As Martin is preparing to save Caroline with an injection of insulin, Danny declares he will pray for her. Martin glances up at Danny while actually speaking to Caroline and says “just a little prick”.
The saddest part was the ending, when Martin walks away from Caroline’s hospital room after seeing Danny and Louisa closely together. I felt like shouting to him: “Don’t give up so easily!”

Sue, I agree with you on the sad ending. I think this is one of the episodes where Martin starts to doubt about himself and starts to think that he doesn’t deserve a beautiful woman like Louisa…
As for the “little prick”.. Those kind of lines are the ones that makes me love this show so much.
With respect to what you say about Louisa: she behaved like an opportunist. We would say here in the Netherlands: she danced to Danny’s piping.. The positive thing for Martin Ellingham was that he is never out of her mind (although Martin doesn’t know that..)

Doc Martin does not like Danny that is certain with his “tosser” remark toward the radio interview at the beginning of the episode and the “little prick” comment near the end. Sue, you are so right that he gives up too easily but maybe he thinks he already lost his chance with Louisa and is not good enough for her and she wants to be with Danny. Though, we see signs from Louisa that the Doc is on her mind and she does push Danny away.
When Mark Mylo shows Caroline how to blow into the breathalyzer did you notice he sucked in on it? And did he give her the test outside the Cronk’s home location from season 7? It looks familiar. If Caroline just let the Doc help her at the beginning and examine her as he wanted, she could have been spared all her troubles.
I liked this episode with lots of stuff happening around Portwenn. I think I can still smell Mr. Cooke.

It WAS the Cronk’s house from series 7, ChazRose.

I liked this episode. Mr Cook was perfect and my gag reflex was firing too…really a great acting job by Martin and Pauline.
I thought Mark and his whole ferramone scheme was pretty funny, poor guy just can’t win.
You can really feel how Martin and Loiusa are just on different wavelengths this whole episode. Uncomfortable and unpleasant conversation. It certainly appears as if they will never get it together. It doesn’t help the situation that Danny and Louisa look well together, cute and small, casually dressed vs big Martin always formally buttoned up in his suit.
Interesting Martin complimented Mark, telling him “well done” regarding Caroline’s blood test. Don’t hear that very often.-
PreciousI can’t hear anthying over the sound of how awesome this article is.
