Funny, funny, funny. Poppy vs Pauline, doc vs Bert. First date disaster.
“Poo water”, “village of lemmings” and the classic ” Louisa… I’m going to need a stool sample”. Lol.
A few observations, I noticed that although Louisa is dressed casually in jeans and the doc is in a suit and tie, they very often match. Lavender and navy on the date and grey and navy at the end. I’ve noticed this before. They are alike yet different.
I also thought the character of Poppy’s mum reminded me of Pauline’s mum. I thought they might even be the same actress, so I looked it up. Not the same actress, but surprisingly Poppy is Maddies real life older sister.-
LuckA million thanks for posting this inoofmatirn.

SueThere are several fun storylines in this episode, but the best is seeing Martin and Louisa continuing from S3E1 to advance their relationship. They are doing much better at relating to each other, although conversation for Martin never comes easily. He seems reasonably comfortable with her as they meet for dinner at her house, although they end up having to go to Bert’s for dinner when her cooker fails. His “hostess gift” to her is memorable, being totally practical in his mind…”yams…they’re a rich source of iron”. Their attempt to discuss over dinner their current reading material is laughable, as their interests are completely different. He is so very gentle and polite with her, as they discuss their dinner date while he draws her blood to test for anemia. He also is so tender with her during the home visit to assess her condition after the vomiting symptoms. And of course, there is that memorable line at a seemingly most tender moment: “Louisa, I’m going to need a stool sample.” The best part, however, is the final scene when she approaches him on her bicycle and they reschedule the dinner date. The meeting concludes with Louisa giving Martin a kiss on the cheek. It is a wonderful moment for him. He strides away with an added spring to his step and seems to feel he is ten feet tall.
This episode also contains an example of the Doc’s usually hidden compassion when he creatively comes up with a solution for a teen-aged patient’s insecurity because of her breast size.
There were some other good lines in this episode. Bert goes to see the Doc when he thinks he is having a heart attack and won’t stop talking when the Doc is trying to run the ECG, so we get these comments:
Doc: “Bert, there are two ways we can determine if you’re having a heart attack. You can shut up and let me do the ECG or you can prattle on and we’ll see if you die in the next couple of minutes.”One of the most memorable lines, however, is not from the Doc but from Mrs. Tishell, after the Doc leaves the chemist shop.
Mrs T: “I could just eat him with a spoon!”I think many fans of the series agree with that.

This episode is Martin at his sweetest. He is so soft spoken almost through the whole episode and not just with Louisa. He even speaks softly when he is at Mrs Tishell’s. It also has three of the most memorable moments of the entire show. The sight gag with the eggplant, Mrs T’s “I could eat him with a spoon”, and taking Louisa’s hand as he gently requests a stool sample. All three are classics!
One thing I realized in this rewatch is the mirroring of stories with Poppy and Mandie who were played by real life sisters. They are both obsessed with something physical – Poppy with her breath and Mandie with her boobs (both start with “b” LOL!). And, even more interesting, they are both treated with the same medication – Poppy’s breath mints!
This might be my favorite Doc-Doc encounter – Martin luring him into the neighbors yard and locking the gate. The look on Gremlin’s face as he walks away! And we see that it’s a pretty foggy morning – the only other time I remember seeing fog that thick was when Louisa’s mother was being loaded into the ambulance in front of the surgery.
Another mirroring was when Bert was talking about “rumbling in the tum”. He said that line twice in that scene and said it a third time changing it slightly to say “rumbling in the pipes”. Of course, several of Martin’s patients experienced the “rumbling in the tum” and his dishwasher experienced the “rumbling in the pipes”.
I love how Martin was not afraid to have the whole village see him on his first real “date” with Louisa at Bert’s Restaurant. When it was obvious that they couldn’t have their meal at Louisa’s house, he certainly could have gotten his car and driven them to an out of town restaurant. I know that would have taken him well past his 6:30 eating curfew, but I would have expected him to desire a little more privacy in this initial stage of courting.

PamThis episode is chock full of priceless moments! Most of them have been mentioned above, but I’m surprised nobody said anything about Martin’s “bra” mishap! I loved how he was so uncomfortable in the bathroom when he had to deal with all of Louisa’s unmentionables. Then, as she was picking up her undies from the floor, wanting to tidy things up before he came in to examine her, she told him to come in. He hilariously turns his back to the camera as he shuts the door, and we can all see that her bra had become hooked into his suit jacket and was now on full display! Another line in this scene that I loved was right before the stool sample line, when Doc said, “I could make you some toast.” I think this episode ranks so high with me because we can see the tender side of Doc that normally doesn’t appear.
