Best part of this Episode was Mrs Averill and her pipe smoking mother followed by Martin telling Louisa she would make a lovely mother. The Oakwood “city slickers” were perfectly annoying and managed to muck up another try at a date between Martin and Louisa. Their child was obnoxious, the medicinal green soup foul, and the badger burning creative. Anthony Oakwood’s reference to Martin possibly having Asperger’s was interesting as so many fans have speculated the same. Martin quickly dismissed the idea, possibly to reinforce the canon that the character is not an Aspie but only socially awkward

SueThis is another of the overall good episodes of Series 3, which I always enjoying re-watching. There are several interesting story lines with well-crafted action and dialogue to support them, as mentioned in the preceding comments.
There is Mrs. Averil and her connection to Louisa’s new neighbors, the Oakwoods. There is the disclosure of Penhale’s problem with agoraphobia and the revelation of Pauline’s attraction to gambling, which will play a more prominent role in subsequent episodes.
Of course, we also see that Martin and Louisa are continuing to find themselves more comfortable in each other’s company and it becomes most obvious when they present a united front against the parenting approach taken by Anthony and Terri Oakwood to their son, Sam.
There are numerous humorous exchanges between the Doc and Mrs. Averil in his office:
Mrs. Averil: “I’ve lost my cat.”
Doc: “That’s not a medical problem, is it?”Doc (after detecting her lung issue and observing that she is a smoker): “Did you think you’d make it to 70?”
M.A.: “I’m 75.”
Doc: “80?”
M.A.: “My mother smoked a pipe until she was 93.”
Doc: “And then she died…”
M.A.: “She lost her pipe.”I also loved the expression on Martin’s face after Mrs. Averil asks the question: “When I’m in hospital, will I be allowed to smoke?”
The interaction in his office between Martin and Anthony Oakwood is also outstanding, as Oakwood raises the subject that Martin may suffer from Asperger’s Syndrome. The exchange becomes rather heated and Oakwood thinks he can calm the waters by saying:
Anthony: “It’s DOCTOR Oakwood. I do have a PhD in Psychology. Oh! We’re both doctors.”
Martin: “But only one of us has a waiting room full of patients.”We see another example of the grumpy doctor’s compassionate side when, with some urging from Auntie Joan, Martin decides to try to help Penhale with his agoraphobia by prescribing therapy rather than “grassing him up” to the authorities. As Auntie Joan says, “many people have phobias but continue working and no one seems to mind.”
The most memorable lines from this episode come between Martin and Louisa. Martin is becoming so infatuated with Louisa that he starts to let his feelings come to the surface through his words.
Before the Oakwoods ruin the evening, Louisa is preparing starters for the evening meal, as Martin looks on:
ME: “Louisa, you look very….busy.”
LG: “Thank you.” (She seems to realize this was intended as a compliment and takes it in that sense.)But the best lines come near the end, after Martin has paid a house call on the Oakwoods and examined Sam, determining that he likely has TB.”
L: “How’s Sam?”
M: “Marginally less irritating than his parents.”
L: “Nobody could be that irritating. Has he got TB?”
M: “Yes, I’m pretty certain….
M: “The boy should make a full recovery from the TB. I can’t do anything about his disastrous upbringing though.”
L: “I do feel sorry for Sam, having a mum and dad like that.
M: “Mmm…”
L: “But, maybe we’re not being fair; we’re not parents.”
M: “You’d make a lovely mother.”The expression on his face as he realizes what he has just said is priceless, as is Louisa’s, after he walks away, and she realizes what a compliment she has received. It is a sweet ending to the episode.

To add a thought to the conversation, I really enjoy the banter between certain characters in this series and wish we saw them again. The doc is at his classically grumpiest, and therefore funniest, when speaking to patients like Mrs Averil and Allison Lane (from 3.1). On the other hand the Oakwoods ,for me, crossed the line from funny to unbelievably obnoxious… Good riddance.
I also thought that both Martin Clunes and Caroline Catz did a great job with facial expressions this episode that spoke volumes.-
DisneyFilyaln! This is just what I was looking for.

Martin has such disdain in his voice when he asks if Mrs Averill is a smoker.
I’ve always thought that Terri Oakwood looks like a squirrel when she is standing at Louisa’s door and says “please”.
When Martin diagnoses the student with Slapped Cheek Syndrome, it’s funny how the two men continually escalate the situation while the two women continually try to defuse. That’s about right! 😉
Partway through the episode I started to notice how many physiological problems were evident (or suggested) for different characters. It started with the Aspergers suggested by Anthony Oakwood and then sort of twinned when Louisa mentioned the concern about the MMR vaccine and autism. So I started listing them (and interesting that the main guest character was a Physiologist).
Martin – suggestion of Aspergers
Louisa’s friend’s son – suggestion of autism from MMR vaccine
Penhale – Agoraphobia
Mrs Averill – nicotine addiction
Pauline – gambling addiction
Martin – Haemophobia (as Aunt Joan seems to remind him)
Sam – ODD? – probably as a result of his idiot parents’ ideas about child rearing-
BostonThat’s the best answer by far! Thanks for cogriibuttnn.
