Morwenna's parents, Jack and Tara, arrive back unexpectedly from missionary work in Kenya, explaining that Tara has cancer which she believes to be inoperable. Martin, however, proves her wrong. Another returnee is surly local boy Dan Willis, whose visit coincides with a number of break-ins in which he tears his face out of photographs. Martin enlists Ruth's help in diagnosing his actions. Meanwhile an eccentric old lady, Mary Rawlings, claims multiple ailments which Martin cures by bestowing on her a stray dog. Bert is alarmed by the amatory advances of his landlady and employer Caitlin.
