Of All the Harbours in
All the Towns
Martin sees Louisa struggling to carry a surfboard and
equipment through town.  He runs up to pick up something that
she has dropped and they have a short discussion about her
taking over surfing club.  She then tells him it would be great to
see him "out of that suit".  She realizes what she just said and
finishes, "and in a wetsuit", almost knocks him over with the
surfboard and then continues up the street.  He watches her
walk away for a beat but then is distracted by John Slater's
runaway dingy in the harbour.

Blood is Thicker
Louisa is visiting Mark's sister, Sandra, who is an herbalist.
Unbeknownst to either of them, Martin is standing at the doorway
as he was on his way in to take Sandra to task over her
"prescriptions".  Louisa tells Sandra that someone, a doctor
actually, told her that her breath had a bit of a "tang".  Sandra
figures out she is talking about Martin and says that some
people have a faulty smelling apparatus.  Louisa thinks about it
for a second and then says maybe that could be the case.  She
then conspiratorially tells Sandra about Martin's blood phobia.
Sandra finds this information very funny, and after Louisa
interjects that he is a very, very good doctor, she joins Sandra in
laughing.  Martin appears mortified that Louisa is discussing this
with the woman he has so little regard for and just at that
moment Louisa spots him in the doorway.  Louisa is rattled and
quickly makes her way out of the room.  Martin has to step aside
to let her through the doorway and stares at her as she retreats
down the stairway.
Martin walks into the pub looking for Mark and runs into Louisa.
Martin appears upset with her but Louisa gets her back up and
appears to be about to rationalize what he overheard that
morning.  He cuts her off by calling Sandra a "Snake Charmer."
Louisa gives it right back to him and tells him that he shouldn't
close his mind to alternative medicine.  Martin agrees that there
is a place for it, but that Sandra is not qualified.  Louisa then
brazenly suggests that maybe Sandra could help him with his
blood phobia.  Martin appears stunned by this suggestion and
glares at Louisa and doesn't move or change his expression as
Danny walks in and interrupts the conversation.  Martin
dismisses Louisa and glares at her again before walking away to
talk to Mark.  When his conversation with Mark is concluded, he
walks out of the pub without another word to Louisa.

On the Edge
Martin is in Mrs Tishell's shop when he sees Louisa walk by
headed for the platt.  He makes an excuse to leave and follows
her down the street,  She spots him as she is approaching the
fishmonger's stall and he greets her.  She asks if he is following
her, he stutters that he had been to see Mrs Tishell, and Louisa
sarcastically tells him that she wouldn't want to accuse him of
stalking.  She continues that she knows what it's like to be
accused of something that you're not, like a certain doctor
saying that she was suffering from delusional romantic
attachments.  Martin stumbles over his words to explain himself,
Louisa suggests that he had been rude and asks if that is an
apology.  Martin says that he didn't apologise and shyly hands
her an envelope.  He tells her it's a card and then wishes her a
Happy Birthday.  Louisa seems touched by the strange looking
card and Martin haltingly asks her to have dinner with him.
Louisa is distracted by something over Martin's shoulder and he
discovers that her father has just walked up.  Louisa introduces
her father to Martin and they have a very short conversation
before Martin stumbles on his words and takes his leave - the
dinner invitation now forgotten.
Martin runs into Louisa in town as she is buying an ice cream
cone and she tells him about how her father always bought her
ice cream as a child.  They seem a little more comfortable with
each other, so Louisa starts teasing him about how he gave her
father's friend a hard time when they visited him at the surgery.
Louisa continues to tease Martin but she is stopped in her tracks
when he refers to her father as a thief.  Louisa can't believe that
he would join in with local gossip and insists that all the time he
has been in the village he has kept his distance, but now he is
joining the community in malicious rumours about her father.
Martin insists that it isn't a rumour, that Joan caught him stealing
money.  Louisa is speechless and smashes her ice cream cone
onto Martin's forehead before storming away.
Louisa is sitting with the review board in a meeting room waiting
for Martin to arrive.  She is startled to see him outside disrupting
the pasty eating contest.  When the meeting starts, Martin is
extremely dismissive of the entire process, but Louisa looks at
the complaints and begins to discredit the people who have filed
the complaints.  She says that even she finds Martin frustrating
at times, but that the village is lucky to have him there.  Martin
watches Louisa defending him with a wary look on his face, but
the consultant in charge of the meeting takes over and tells
Martin that he must attend a people skills training course.  If he
refuses,  the consultant will recommend that Martin be removed
from his position.  Martin stalks out of the meeting and Louisa
haltingly interjects that he probably needs time to think about it.
Louisa makes for the surgery and finds Martin in his consulting
room working on one of his clocks.  She doesn't realize that her
father's bi-polar friend is following her.  Louisa gives Martin a
piece of her mind about how he acted at the meeting and Martin
responds in a combative manner.  Louisa asks him if he even
cares that they want to get rid of him.  She continues on about
how Martin has never tried to fit in and that she has tried to
understand that about him.  But she says she thinks he wanted
this all to go wrong and that he wants them to send him away.
She concludes by admitting to him that she wants him to stay.
Martin seems surprised by her admission and starts to calmly
explain to her when they are interrupted by Jonathan barging
into the consulting room.  Jonathan grabs Louisa and holds a
knife to her  throat.  This begins a long siege in the consulting
room with Jonathan keeping Martin, Louisa, Pauline and
eventually Al and Louisa's father as hostages.
When the siege is over and they are all on the cliffs, Louisa
makes the call for the ambulances and then starts to help Martin
clean the blood from his face.  Martin notices her father watching
them and Louisa turns to look at him and leaves Martin to go say
her goodbyes to her father.

Out of the Woods
Louisa walks into the surgery waiting room and tells Martin she
needs a word in the consulting room.  She is a bit angry with
Martin and chastises him for not being a part of the community.
As she is about to leave, she realizes that she hasn't made it
clear what she was talking about (Martin is standing there looking
a bit bewildered).  She tells Martin that Mark is upset because he
was rude to him when Mark asked Martin to be his Best Man.
Martin blusters that he is not qualified to be Best Man since he
barely knows Mark.  Louisa points out that he has never tried to
get to know him.  Martin counters that he is not at all interested in
getting to know Mark.  Louisa's parting shot is that Mark likes him
but that Martin has upset Mark.  As she exits the consulting room,
Martin shrugs and seems unfazed by Louisa's speech, but as he
starts to sit down at his desk she opens the door again and
thanks him for saving Danny's life.  After she leaves, he says,
"You're welcome" to the closed door.
Louisa is hanging a banner for the School Fair and Martin walks
by.  She tells him that Al will be Mark's Best Man but that it still
doesn't excuse Martin for how he acted.  She asks for his help
with the banner.  He continues to help her around the fair area
and when Louisa mentions that she has to get the tools back to
Danny, Martin makes a snide comment about him.  Louisa asks
him for some additional help and they seem to be working well
together and then Martin insults the painting of one of Louisa's
students.  Just then, a young boy has an emergency on the
beach and they run down to assist him.  After a harrowing few
minutes, Martin is able to give him an injection and he starts
breathing again.  As Martin and Louisa are walking back up from
the beach, she tells him that she was glad he was there.  Martin
says that makes a change, but Louisa starts to say that of course
she was glad, when Pauline runs up with the phone and an
emergency situation with Mark and Al in the woods.
After Martin gets lost in the woods, finds Al and Mark and saves
Mark's life, they return to the surgery and their three women
waiting on the porch (Louisa, Pauline and Julie).  As they all pile
into the surgery and only Martin & Louisa remain on the porch,
she tells him she was worried.  He misunderstands and she
clarifies that she was worried about HIM.  Martin seems a little
stunned by her admission and he tries to put off Stewart, who is
calling to him from inside the building.  He continues to stare at
Louisa and seems about to say something to her but Stewart is
going on about bleeding all over his floor so he has to deal with
the problem at hand.  He apologises to Louisa and she motions
that she understand and walks off the porch toward town.  Martin
stands in the door and silently watches her leave and then looks
back at her again as he enters the surgery to attend to his
walking wounded.

Born With a Shotgun
It's nighttime and the baby won't settle down.  Louisa is trying a
move that worked the night before (she calls it "stir the baby"),
but he just keeps crying.  Louisa hands him to Martin to try to
settle him and instructs him to dance.  Martin looks at her
skeptically, but gamely tries a side to side dance move.  Louisa
tries to tell him that he's not really doing what she envisioned
and then decides it's making him worse.  She takes him back and
starts her "stir the baby" move again.  Martin mumbles, "Oh good
God" and turns away.
It's morning and Louisa is sitting up in bed with the baby on her
lap.  Martin is lying beside her still asleep.  She says his name to
wake him up and before he seems completely awake she tells
him that she and James will move with him to London.  His eyes
slowly pop open and he turns toward her and says, "Right."
Louisa hesitantly asks, "Oh.  Just 'right'?"  Martin responds, "No.
Good."  Louisa softly says, "Good." and smiles lovingly down at
Martin.  Just then, she is distracted by a scratching noise and
Buddy comes charging into the room and onto the bed.  The
baby is startled and starts crying, Martin jumps out of the bed to
chase the dog and the lovely moment is over.
Martin is about to start surgery, Morwenna has arrived late on
her first day on the job, and the sound of the baby crying
upstairs is adding to his stress in the waiting room.  Martin goes
up to the bedroom and asks Louisa if there is any way she can
keep the noise down.  She turns from the crib and sarcastically
tells him that of course she can - she will just flick the switch on
the back of his head that turns him off for an hour.  Martin tries
to explain that it's not ideal for the surgery and that maybe she
could take him for a walk.  Louisa sarcastically responds, "You're
telling us to get out of the house."  Martin attempts to defuse the
situation by telling her that it's a fact that the feeling of motion is
soothing for babies.  Louisa remains combative over him
throwing "facts" at her.  He starts to walk toward the door but hits
on a new tactic and suggests that she should send in her notice
to the school if she was serious earlier.  She turns and sincerely
says that she did mean what she said, but then gets her back up
a bit when she tells him that she has already written it but just
needs to post it.  Bingo!  As Martin leaves the room he matter of
factly says, "Good time to go for a walk."  Louisa sighs, goes to
pick up the baby, and says loudly enough for the retreating
Martin to hear, "Okay.  Come on then...ALBERT!", turning her
head toward Martin as she says the name so he won't miss it.
Martin slides back into the doorway and says, "Albert?"  She tells
him that they can't just keep referring to him as "the baby", an he
says, "Yes, but ALBERT?"  Louisa says he needs a name and
sarcastically throws out a few suggestions, ending with "Elton".
She uses her hand to dismiss him and tells him he has patients
waiting and they won't be in his way as she grabs a blanket and
throws it over her shoulder.
It's early morning and the baby is crying in his crib.  Both Louisa
and Martin are still sleeping.  Martin sits halfway up and kneads
Louisa's shoulder a couple of times and says "Louisa, Louisa".
She opens her eyes and turns to look at him.  He points to the
crib and sleepily says, "The baby", and plops his head back
down on the pillow.  She stares at him for a couple of seconds
and just as she starts to turn toward the crib they both sit up as
they have heard a noise downstairs.  Martin gets out of bed and
slowly starts toward the bedroom door when he hears a song
playing on a radio.  Martin walks into the living room in his
pajamas and sees Morwenna starting her working day early (half
past six) in the kitchen.  Louisa follows, also in her pajamas
holding the baby.  Louisa explains to her that there ARE
boundaries and Martin throws her out.
Martin is closing up for the day in his consulting room when
Louisa walks in with the baby in her arms dressed to go out to
meet her friend Pippa.  Fishing for a compliment, she asks him
how she looks and he says she looks a bit flushed.  He checks
her pulse and says it is fine and she sarcastically replies that it is
the closest she's going get to a compliment - her regular pulse.
Martin seems a little bewildered - he didn't pick up on what she
was asking.  She then says that it feels wrong to go out and
leave the baby.  Martin takes the baby from her arms and quietly
tells her she has nothing to worry about and then actually makes
a small joke.  "Apparently, I have some medical training."  Louisa
reminds him about checking his diaper and reading him a
bedtime story.  She says that he especially seems to like the one
about the talking fire engine.  Martin scoffs at the notion that he
would understand what is being read to him.  This time Louisa
throws out the line about "studies have shown..." regarding
reading to babies and their development.  Martin agrees with
her.  Louisa haltingly say "Bye" to her men and heads toward the
door with a look that says she is uncertain about leaving.  Martin
sort of playfully holds the baby up in the air and wiggles him
about.
It is evening, and Martin is sitting on the sofa in the living room
with the baby lying next to him with pillows all around supporting
him.  Martin appears to be writing in a book and stops to reach
over and tickle him on his belly.  He looks back at the baby and
decides to put the book away and picks up a medical journal.  He
quietly tells the baby about the article, the author's name, and
what the article is about.  He then turns the magazine and shows
him a picture of the author and the baby looks interested in what
Martin is showing him.  Martin starts reading the article out loud
and the baby breaks into giggles as he watches Martin.  As
Martin is quietly, but expressively reading the article to the baby,
Louisa silently walks in the back door.  As she quietly closes the
door, she stops to listen and then softly walks over to the
opening to the living room peeking around the wall to see Martin
engaged in reading the article and the baby's rapt attention on
his father.  She smiles.

Cats and Sharks
Louisa shows up at Martin's back door while he is having
breakfast.  She is on her way to work and only has a minute, but
she has some notes with her thoughts on the details for the
christening.  Martin asks her who is taking care of the baby today
and she says that her mother is, of course.  Martin seems a bit
bewildered and stumbles with his words as her tells her he
thought he saw James being wheeled around the village by a girl
the previous day.  Louisa is annoyed at that and tells him that
her mother is looking after James today, just like she looked after
him yesterday.  She's running late and hands Martin the papers.
Martin is out for blood.  He has just discovered that James has
been under the care of a teenager with an ankle tag for the last
two days.  He wheels James into the school corridor and opens
the door of the room where Louisa is teaching a class.  Louisa
can't believe that her mother has done this, but assures Martin
she will deal with it. Martin questions whether Louisa should just
hand him back to her mother and hope she doesn't do it again.
Martin tells Louisa that her mother "couldn't care less about our
baby."  But Louisa strikes back, "Oh, but you could.  A man
who's about to leave his son and move hundred of miles away
for the sake of his career?  Oh, yeah.  You really care about our
baby."  Martin sputters, "That's a complete distortion."  Louisa
tells him that that's enough, she is in the middle of a lesson and
starts back into the classroom.  Martin asks, "What about James
Henry?"  Louisa takes the stroller into the classroom and angrily
tells him it's not his problem.
Louisa's mother has a medical emergency and she has taken
her to Martin.  Since the ambulance won't get there in time,
Martin will have to perform a surgical procedure there in the
consulting room to save her life.  Louisa follows him into the
hallway and pleadingly asks him to look after her mother.  He
tries to reassure her that it is a simple and quick procedure.  He
calmly explains exactly what he will be doing during the
procedure.  It's the nicest and calmest conversation they've had
recently.
Louisa's mother is being loaded into the ambulance after the
successful surgery.  Louisa walks out on the porch with James
and tells Martin that she will take James with her to the hospital in
the ambulance.  She asks him if he is sure that her mother will be
okay and he says that she will.  As Louisa gets to the back of the
ambulance, she looks back at Martin and he says, with a
reassuring tone, "She'll be fine".  Louisa gives him a half smile as
she turns to climb into the ambulance.
It's evening, and Martin is washing dishes at the sink when he
sees Louisa walking up to his back door.  He opens the door and
she smiles at him.  He asks after her mother and Louisa says
that she is "comfortable, whatever that means."  She tells him the
consultant told her that Martin saved her mother's life and that
she is really grateful.  Louisa becomes a little tentative and then
asks Martin if he enjoyed being a surgeon again.  Martin quietly
tells her that he didn't do it for fun.  Louisa counters that it must
have been nice to get a bit of practice before going back to
London.  Interestingly, as she says "going back to London", she
looks into the room (she is still standing just outside the
doorway) and over to her left.  It struck me that as she was
talking about him going back to London that she had a flashback
of Edith sitting in the kitchen (in that spot - over to the left)
several times when she was there pregnant with James.  It was
almost like she needed to reassure herself that Edith wasn't
there, since she must be aware that Edith lives in London.
Anyway, Martin is just standing there and not responding to her
and Louisa gets uncomfortable again.  She then asks if he can
watch James for awhile.  Martin asks why and Louisa counters
that he could just say that he was happy to help.  He tells her
that he "would be happy to help, obviously."  Louisa explains that
her mother asked her to pop into Bert's Spanish night at the
restaurant and report back.  Louisa says that she assumes he
doesn't want to come and he quickly says, "No."  Louisa
resignedly says, "No.  I didn't think so."  She wheels James'
stroller through the door to Martin and thanks him.  As she turns
to walk away, Martin calls, "Uh...Lou..Louisa!"  She turns and
walks back to the door with an expectant look on her face and he
ask her to request that they turn the music off - it's very loud.
Louisa has this look on her face that says, "I should have
guessed" and sarcastically says, "Yes Martin."  Martin wheels
James over next to the sink and tells him that he will finish the
washing up and "we'll have some fun."

City Slickers
Martin arrives at Louisa's door for their dinner date.  She invites him
in and tells him that she has planned for them to eat outside.  He is
surprised, she asks if he is okay with it and he seems to reluctantly
agree.
Louisa offers Martin wine, but he declines and she suggests it's a
special occasion.  When Martin questions this she says that this is
not something they do every day.  Martin does agree that he
doesn't often eat in someone's back garden and asks whether they
will be having hot dogs and hamburgers?  While Louisa talks about
her new neighbors, Martin can't take his gaze off her face.
While Louisa is getting their starters from the fridge, Martin offers to
help.  Louisa asks him if he saw the dolphins earlier and he tells her
he was busy with patients all day.  The conversation is a bit stilted,
but Martin is again gazing at Louisa from across the room as she
moves back and forth in the kitchen.  Martin says her name and she
turns to look at him.  He sputters out, "You look very..." and he
pauses for several seconds while Louisa stops and looks across at
him.  He finally finishes up with, "...busy."  Louisa lowers her eyes,
smiles, and says "Thank you."  It seems that they were on the same
wavelength this time even though Martin was not able to say what
he was thinking.  Just then, there's a knock on the door and the
moment is over.
Martin has spent a little bit of time each with Anthony and Terri
Oakwood, but he just can't do it anymore.  He leaves Terri on the
patio and walks back into the kitchen where Louisa is talking to
Sam.  As he walks by Louisa he tells her that he is off and he has to
do that "thing".  Louisa asks what "thing" and he says, "Uh...didn't I
mention it?  Uh...anyway.  I...I'll see myself out."  Louisa is not
amused.
Louisa has called Martin to the school to check on a student
because she fears he may have measles.  Martin determines that it
is not measles, but a common infection.  When he tells the boy's
parents (who have just arrived) that it is common, the father takes
offense and thinks that Martin is calling him or his family "common."
Louisa manages to defuse that bomb, but when Martin tells the
parents that he may have gotten the infection from someone who
kissed him or licked him, the parents are outraged.  They turn to
Louisa and ask her what kind of school she is running.  Louisa
glares at Martin in exasperation.
.
After seeing to the sick child, Martin and Louisa are walking through
the school hallway.  Louisa asks him if he got home okay last night.
He says he did.  She sarcastically asks if he slept well?  If he didn't
lie awake feeling guilty?  Martin has no idea what she is getting at.
After running into Sam and sending him off to his next class, Martin
and Louisa walk out into the school yard while Louisa tells him about
her concern that the sick child had measles.  Martin assures her
that it shouldn't be a concern since most of the children he sees
have been vaccinated.  They get into a discussion about the safety
of vaccines.  Louisa understands some parents' concern that the
vaccines might not be safe, but Martin is completely dismissive of
that notion and launches into a speech about the increase in
measles because of idiotic parents who believe the studies that
have been proven to be flawed.  The conversation ends abruptly
when Louisa says, "Thank you...Doctor", turns on her heel and
strides back into the building, leaving Martin watching her with a
frustrated look on his face.
Louisa is on her patio and sees Martin chasing Sam onto the
Oakwood's patio.  As Martin is demanding to know why Terri is
burning a badger on her patio, Louisa comes running up because
the smell is wafting all over the area.  Martin then tells Anthony that
he is there because he caught Sam vandalizing cars - including
Martin's car.  Anthony dismisses the actions of his son, using his
new-age theories about child-rearing.  When he tells Martin that he
will talk to Sam in private and tell him that some people are a little
too precious about their possessions, Louisa steps in and defends
Martin from the accusation.  Martin and Louisa stand united in telling
the Oakwoods that they need to take responsibility to teach their
son right and wrong.
As they walk away from the Oakwood's patio, Martin trips over Mrs
Averill's cat and sputters that he hates cats.  Louisa agrees that she
does too.  Martin looks at her in surprise almost like he is seeing her
in a new light.  As they continue walking, he mutters, "Badgers, cats,
dogs.  This village is like a petting zoo."  As they reach Louisa's
door, he smells the sleeve of his suitcoat and says that he needs to
go home and change.  Louisa smells the sleeve of her sweater and
says that she does too - that she stinks.  Martin simply says, "Yes.
Goodbye." and walks away.  Louisa seems a little miffed that he
simply agreed with her statement and looks at his retreating back a
couple of times before entering her cottage.
Louisa and Martin walk into her classroom together and Martin is
telling her that they need to watch for any signs of TB in her
students, since he just diagnosed Mrs Averill with the disease.
Louisa asks if she should notify the parents and he agrees that it
would be best.  Louisa sits down at her desk and coyly asks why he
didn't just phone her with this information?  Martin takes a seat on
top of one of the student desks across from her and says that he
was passing by.  He looks like he is settling in for a chat with her
when all of a sudden the door opens and her students start to
stream into the room.  She tells him that she needs to teach the
class and he says he has lots to do himself.  She stops him before
he leaves and tells him that he might want to check on Sam, since
they sent him home earlier that day.
Louisa is arriving home from school when she sees Martin leaving
the Oakwood's house and she asks after Sam.  While they stand in
front of the door to her cottage, Martin tells her that Sam is
marginally less irritating than his parents.  Louisa says that she
does feel sorry for Sam, having the type of parents that he does.
But she then admits that maybe they're not being fair since they are
not parents.  Martin says, "You'd make a lovely mother."  Louisa
looks at him, startled.  It slowly dawns on him what he has just said
and his whole face opens up.  Just then, Anthony calls to Martin to
come quick because Terri has scalded herself with the green soup.
It takes both of them a second to come back to earth and
understand what Anthony is saying.  Martin looks into her face one
last time, she nods to him, and he walks to the Oakwood's door.
Louisa is still processing the conversation when Martin looks back at
her before entering the Oakwood's house.  Louisa looks over
toward their door and catches a glimpse of his back before he
disappears.  A small, shy smile comes over her face and she turns
to unlock the door to her cottage.

Sh*t Happens
Louisa and Roger Fenn are at the Fish Cellars listening to Martin
being interviewed on the radio.  Louisa laughs and smiles at
Martin being "himself" over the air.
This scene also only involves Louisa.  She is talking to her
coworker, Jean, and they are discussing Martin's appearance
that day on Radio Portwenn.  Louisa starts looking for something
on the table and Jean asks what she is looking for.  Louisa says,
"My Martin...marking.  My marking."  This is the first time we see
that he is on her mind.
Martin is out washing his car when Louisa comes walking by.
She stops and apologises for the misunderstanding over his
treatment of Roger Fenn.  The conversation is a little stilted, but
Louisa starts talking about the food and drink at the local pub.
It's obvious that she is trying to get him interested in meeting her
there, but it takes him a little while to catch on.  She says that
maybe they will run into each other there one day and starts to
leave.  Just then, the penny drops for Martin and he says, "I've
got an idea."  He immediately sets a date for them to meet and
Louisa continues walking up the hill with a skip in her step.
Martin meets Louisa on the Platt and they start walking into the
pub.  He is in a very good mood because he has finally gotten
the illness that was running rampant through the village under
control.  He has also publicly exonerated the village's water
supply, covered up for Bert, and saw that Roger seems to be
happily back to work.  But he tells Louisa that his visits to Radio
Portwenn were all painful.  She says that if he continues to carry
on, that she might be able to admit she was on his interview
panel.  He jokingly tells her that she might not want to break
cover just yet.  Things are looking up for this first date.  Louisa
goes to get their drinks while he goes out to the balcony to find
them a seat.  But Mark Mylow is standing alone on the balcony
and is glad to see Martin.  He wants to talk to Martin about his
depression.  Martin tries to tell him that he would be glad to talk,
but not now, but Mark doesn't let him get a word in edgewise.
When Louisa walks out with the drinks, Mark asks her if they can
have some privacy because they are discussing a delicate
matter.  Louisa is surprised, but smiles at Martin and walks back
into the pub.  She watches them for a minute, smiles at Martin
again, shrugs her shoulders and walks out of sight to another
area of the pub.  It looks like Martin is in for a long session
listening to Mark's problems.

Always on My Mind
Louisa and Danny are sitting on a bench just up the road from the
surgery.  Martin walks by and scowls as he sees them.  Martin,
"Afternoon."  Louisa, "Hello."  Danny, "Afternoon."  Martin doesn't
slow his stride and Louisa watches his back as he continues down
the hill.
Martin has been called to the school on an emergency to remove
a small fishbone from the throat of a student.  After he finishes
and the student throws up all over the front of his suit, Louisa
asks Martin if he would look at Tricia's (new teacher's) severly
chapped hands.  Martin's mood has gotten progressively worse
while he's been there.  It seems to have started with his
annoyance with Louisa at all the time he has seen her spending
with Danny, and worsened because the fishbone was tiny and he
doesn't feel it was an emergency.  The student throwing up on
him and Louisa asking him to look at Tricia's hands are the last
straws.  He squares up to Louisa and starts by saying, "Let me
make a couple of things clear for you Miss Glasson..."  By the
time he finishes, Louisa's annoyance level is approaching
Martin's.  After he leaves, she apologises to Tricia.
Martin has received another emergency call to the school.  This
time it is because Tricia has fainted, but he quickly determines
that it was because she did not eat any lunch.  Once again, he is
really annoyed at Louisa.  When she asks again that he look at
Tricia's hands, he once again tells her that he would be happy to
if she would make an appointment at the surgery.  When Louisa
presses him, he asks Tricia if she uses gloves for washing up.
When she says that she doesn't, he simply says, "I think you
should."  He turns on his heel and walks out the door.
Louisa follows Martin out to the schoolyard after this latest battle.
She tells him that she can't keep apologising for his behaviour
and he tells her that she shouldn't - he didn't ask her to.  She
tries to get him to understand that his patients want a good
bedside manner, but he is dismissive of this idea.  He feels that
the patients want a competent doctor rather than a good bedside
manner.  Louisa pleads with him to try and understand what she
is saying.  Martin counters that little that she says or does makes
much sense to him.  All of a sudden, this conversation seems to
have moved from his public demeanor to their personal
relationship and they both become tongue tied.  Louisa suggests
that maybe they should sit down, have a drink, and try to figure
out how they feel about each other and Martin immediately
accepts her suggestion.  She tells him that she can't right now
because she has plans.  Martin sneers, asking if she is going to a
prayer meeting?  Louisa starts to say that she isn't seeing Danny,
but she stops mid-sentence and simply says that she is busy, but
will meet him tomorrow evening.  She angrily tells him that she will
be there and he can join her or not join her.  As she turns to walk
away he says that he will be there.  She turns back to him in
surprise and says, "Really?"  He says, "Yes." and turns and walks
away.
.
Martin has just arrived home from attending to Phil Pratt's injury
when Louisa walks past the surgery.  She stops and says she
heard about Phil.  She seems to be hinting about the gossip
regarding the outing of his sexuality, but it goes right over his
head and he just thinks she is talking about the accident and tells
her that Phil should fully recover.  He tells her he will see her in
the pub later and Louisa continues on her way with Martin gazing
at her as she walks down the hill.  He looks like he has a slight
smile as he turns to go into the surgery.
Martin is closing up the surgery for the night.  He has changed
into a different suit, shirt and tie.  As he is checking his teeth in a
mirror, the surgery door opens and Tricia walks in.  She tells him
that she does have OCD and wants his help.  He tries to explain
that he can't see her now because he has to be somewhere.  She
tells him that she won't be able to leave the building for another
30 minutes because of her disorder.  Martin looks dismayed, but
knows that he she needs his help.  In the meantime, Louisa is in
the pub and takes a bottle of wine and two goblets out to a table
on the balcony.  Back to Martin in his consulting room listening to
Tricia's recitation of her symptoms while he checks his watch with
a look of resignation.  Then back to Louisa who has been
watching and waiting for him.  Danny walks out onto the balcony
and asks if she is waiting for
someone.  She looks at the two goblets, sets one aside, smiles at
Danny, and says, "Not anymore."

Driving Mr McLynn
Martin rushes to Louisa's new cottage after a call from Aunt Ruth
saying that Louisa has fainted/nearly fainted.  After his initial
check on her he states that it is looking less and less like an
emergency.  He then starts to get very agitated with Louisa and
tells her that she is doing too much for a woman in her seventh
month of her pregnancy.  He tries to tell her that she needs to
reduce her work hours, but she says that she can't because she
is the acting head - and that she has applied for the permanent
head job.  This infuriates Martin and he loudly declares that she
mad and asks how she expects to take that position and care for
a baby at the same time.  She says she will get help and he
shouts, "Not from me!".  After Aunt Joan chastises him, he
reminds her that Louisa has made it abundantly clear that she
wants no help from him and Louisa agrees.  After complaining
about the state of the cottage he says that the conditions to lead
to a miscarriage.  At that point, Aunt Joan all but throws him out.
Martin runs into Mr Branning in town and he asks Martin if what
he heard from Stu is true - that Martin is against the appointment
of Louisa as the new permanent head of the school.  Martin tells
him that it is true and he goes on to tell him that very few women
have the mental and physical capacity to work full time and bring
up a small child.  He finishes by saying that with the best will in
the world, Miss Glasson is not one of them.  What Martin doesn't
realize is that Louisa has come up behind him with the students
she is leading back to school and she has heard the insult.
Martin turns and sees her and they exchange a hard stare.
Louisa marches toward the school while Martin stands there
watching her leave.  As he turns to go in the opposite direction,
Louisa turns back to glare at him.
Martin and Edith are sitting side by side in his kitchen going over
the article she has written.  Edith tells Martin that she, "has
missed this".  Martin turns his head to look at her and it looks like
they might be about to have a "moment".  In a parallel to all the
times Martin & Louisa have been interrupted at key emotional
moments, at this moment there is a knock on the kitchen door -
and it is Louisa.  She obviously doesn't realize that Edith is there
and has a whole speech for Martin about how he belittled her in
front of colleagues and students and that he told the governors
not to vote for her.  She tells him that he has a pompous and
chauvinistic attitude toward her and all women and it is why she
never, ever thought they could be together.  It's at that moment
that she sees Edith sitting at the table.  Edith decides to leave,
but Martin becomes very cold toward Louisa and tells Edith not
to leave because Miss Glasson is not staying.  The two women
stand up for themselves - Louisa says she is staying and Edith
says she is leaving and will be imagining all the fun she will be
missing.  As Edith tries to exit through the kitchen door, there is a
very awkward moment when she and Louisa both try to occupy
the space in the doorway and Louisa's baby bump is taking up
most of the doorway.  Martin closes the door behind Edith, and
still in that cold voice asks Louisa that now she has ruined his
evening if there is anything else she has to say to him.  Louisa
starts to tell him that she wants to lead her own life and that she
will never need that kind of help from him, but she starts crying,
opens the door, the door slams into Martin's forehead and she
leaves.
Bert is following Louisa as she takes bags to the garbage bins
and he is asking her if there is something going on between
Louisa and Al.  (The village girl pack saw Al at Louisa's house
and misconstrued what was going on.)  As Louisa is putting the
bags in the bins, Martin walks by and asks if it is true?  He is
referring to what he heard from Sally - that Louisa was given the
head teacher's job.  Louisa asks, "Is what true?"  Bert, of course,
is on another planet and says, "What, that you were kissing Al?"
Martin says, "That you were made head teacher." and then looks
at Bert as if to say, "Wait. What?"  Louisa gets her back up and
says that she has, and that now would be the time for him to say
"congratulations."  His concentration is back on Louisa and he
tells her no - that this is when he tells her that he thinks she is
mad.  Martin turns on his heel and walks away.

Aromatherapy
As Martin is about to enter the grocers, he sees Louisa greet
Danny on the street and give him a peck on the cheek.  He
stands there in the doorway, not able to move and not able to
take his eyes off the pair.  A woman trying to get into the shop
finally puses into him and breaks the spell and he goes into the
shop.  A few minutes later, he is leaving the shop and sees
Louisa and Danny walking toward the school with the plants they
have purchased.  Again, he stands there staring at them and
looks like someone has pulled the rug out from under him.  This
time it is Mark's Jeep coming around the corner and honking at
him that breaks the moment, although he sees that Mark has Julie
in the Jeep with him and he seems to be wondering what his
problem is when Mark has this pretty woman riding around with
him.
Not long after he saw her on the street, Louisa comes up to the
surgery as Martin is shooing the dog out of the building. Martin
asks how her new job is going and she explains that she
sometimes wonders if she is really up to the job.  She thinks
maybe everyone feels that way in a new job, but not Martin of
course, because he is a proper professional.  She then tells him
that she has come for some professional advice.  She has a
friend who she feels is drinking too much and wonders how to
approach the subject.  Martin immediately realizes she is talking
about Caroline because he has the same concerns.  The
conversation quickly degenerates, probably because Martin is still
stinging after seeing Louisa and Danny together.  The last time
they had bumped into each other was right after he overheard
her telling Mark Mylow's sister about his haemophobia - another
conversation that did not go well.  This conversation eventually
turns to the subject of giving advice and Louisa angers Martin by
trying to point out that his patients might be more inclined to take
his advice if he would just listen and be more approachable.
Martin says that if she is so conversant with the finer points of his
job, then she doesn't need his advice on what to say to Caroline,
and he stomps off back into the surgery.
Danny has come to the school while Louisa is watering the plants
in the classroom.  He remembers that they served detention in
this room when they were in school and they both recall it was for
pushing a fellow student into a wheelie bin.  As they continue with
the small talk, Danny tells Louisa that he only did that thing to
Martin because he kissed her.  Louisa is shocked and asks if he
has said something?  Danny asks who she is talking about?  She
says, "Martin.  Didn't you just say?"  Danny then says it was
Martin Ferry who they pushed into the wheelie bin all those years
ago.  The penny drops for Danny and he tells her that now he
understands why she has been cool to him.  Louisa protests that
she hasn't been cool.  And that anyway, nothing actually ever
happened.  It was just moments.  A moment, really.
Martin is at the hospital to check on Caroline, and as he stops in
the doorway to her room, he sees Louisa and Danny sitting side
by side at her bedside with their backs to him.  He watches while
Danny puts his hand on Louisa's back and slightly massages her
back.  Martin, again, seems shocked at the sight of them together
once again, and looking very "together".  He stands there stock
still with a look of devastation on his face.  Just then, Louisa turns
and sees him standing there and she slightly shrugs her shoulder
to remove Danny's hand from her back.  Martin continues to stare
at her for another few seconds, and then silently turns and walks
slowly out of the room.  Louisa is a bit flustered, looks down,
starts to look back, and then quietly looks back at Caroline.  We
see a very fragile looking Martin walking down the hospital
corridor.  He looks like he has closed down his emotions and we
watch his back as he mechanically walks toward the exit.

Better the Devil
Louisa is nowhere to be seen during most of this episode.  At one
point, right after Bert has been teasing him about Martin having a
"piece missing", he has to run to the school for a medical
emergency.  After dealing with the emergency, he is walking through
the school corridor and stops dead in his tracks.  He goes right up to
the window in the door of the classroom and stares at the teacher he
can only see from behind.  She has her dark hair up in a ponytail
and is wearing a salmon colored sweater just like one that Louisa
wore.  He starts to open the door, slamming into a student standing
there and the teacher turns to face him - revealing a young woman
who looks nothing like Louisa.
Martin is sitting in his kitchen with Edith and she is examining the
wound on the palm of his hand.  He stands up to go get antiseptic
when there is a knock on the kitchen door.  He opens the door and is
shocked to see Louisa standing there.  He says, "Louisa."  She
smiles and says, "Hello Martin."  He asks, "How are you?" and then
his eyes drop down and he looks back at her face in shock, "You're
pregnant."  Louisa sort of bites her lip, says, "Yes, I am" and smiles
at him.

The Departed
Louisa calls Martin out to Aunt Joan's farm to attend to Theo
Wenn when he has a reaction after Aunt Joan disciplines him by
locking him in the chicken coop.  Martin acts as the peacemaker
when Louisa and Aunt Joan continue their argument over what
has happened.  He then says that he was often locked in the
cupboard when he was a child.  He seems to indicate that it was
a reasonable type of discipline, and that it didn't affect him, but
the startled look on Louisa's face says that this is news to her.
You also sense that she is thinking, "Oh yes, it didn't affect you -
NOT AT ALL!"
Martin and Louisa both end up at Theo Wenn's house.  Martin
was called there because Theo has been getting worse.  Louisa
thought she was there just to drop off schoolwork, but they
actually want a statement from her over the incident at Aunt
Joan's farm.  Martin leaves and Louisa is about to follow when
she tells the Wenns, "You know, Martin is a very, very good
doctor." Mrs Wenn responds with, "You're carrying his child,
aren't you?"  When they are both outside they begin to argue.
Martin thinks that Louisa should not have gotten into the
discussion about the incident, but Louisa says that someone had
to defend his aunt.  He tells her that he is a doctor and needs to
remain impartial.  She tells him, "Impartial is fine.  Unemotional?
Not so good."  Martin say that she has enough emotions buzzing
around for the both of them.  He says it is a product of her
hormonal imbalance.  Louisa sarcastically says that it's much
better to spend time around people who don't show any
feelings.  He is puzzled and asks what she means.  Louisa
responds, "Why don't you complain about it to your friend Edith
then?  I'm sure she's the type who wouldn't let annoying things
like emotions get in the way."  Martin is even more puzzled and
asks what Edith has to do with it?  Louisa says, "I'm just saying
that I'm glad that I'm hormonal because it's better than being cold
and prickly and intimidating.  But if that's what makes you happy,
then that's fine then.  Great.  Good for you."  At that point, Martin
has become distracted by Louisa's mismatched shoes.  He
points it out to her, she tells him to shut up and storms away.
As Martin is leaving Theo Wenn's house again, Louisa is arriving
to deliver more homework.  This conversation is a bit calmer than
the one earlier.  They both now seem to be on the same page
about the Wenns' lack of discipline for their son and that is
punctuated when Martin starts to say, "Be nice if they applied
that discipline..." and in unison they say, "...to their own boy."
Martin then continues, "Well, sooner or later they'll have to own
up.  Have to take responsibility for their own child."  Louisa looks
down at her growing baby bump and simply says, "Yes."  They
both seem to realize that this conversation could be about their
expected child and there is a slight awkward pause.  Martin then
recovers and offers to take the homework up, but Louisa says
she can manage and she shows him that she is now wearing the
correct, matching shoes.  Martin stands there and watches her
walk into the house with a thoughtful, but pained look on his face.

Gentlemen Prefer
Martin goes to the school to see if Louisa can help him identify the
very ill boy when Elaine writes down the wrong number.  Louisa
teases him about all of the people he has been throwing out of his
surgery.  She then tells him that he always has a line and that every
conversation is a competition that he has to win.  She finishes by
saying that it is so "male."   Martin responds, "Thank you."

They go into the office and Louisa calls the boy's house.  When
they determine that Bobby is the boy he is looking for, Martin grabs
the phone and talks to the mother.  Louisa corrects him on the time
it will take to get to the house, and after he hangs up the phone, he
starts to ask Louisa for directions and she hands him a piece of
paper and simply says, "Map."  Martin looks at her curiously, but
with respect for anticipating what he needed. Louisa watches him
walk out with a look of mixed feelings on her face.
When Louisa visits Roger in the hospital, she expresses disgust
that Martin has not been in to check on him.  Roger looks at her
and asks her why that bothers her so much.  Louisa looks unsure.
Martin is about to enter the church for the wedding when he sees
Louisa walking toward him.  He says to her, "Louisa.  You're
looking..."  She walks right past with no acknowledgement.  Martin
finishes, "...straight through me" and he walks into the church with a
puzzled look on his face.  He confronts her in the pews and asks if
he has done something to offend her.  She responds that it's what
he hasn't done.  Martin muses that it narrows it down a bit.  Louisa
tells him that she can't believe that he didn't visit Roger in the
hospital.  He starts to ask what she is going on about, but he is
shushed by a woman in front of them because the wedding is about
to begin.

As they are walking into the reception, Louisa comes up to Martin
talking to Roger and tells him it's a bit late for the concerned
routine.  Roger sets her straight by telling her that he did visit him in
the hospital, and that he impressed the hell out of him.  Martin
chimes in that it was mutual.  Louisa is a bit startled that not only
was she wrong about Martin's actions, but that the two men now
seem to have formed a mutual admiration society. She hastily
makes her exit and enters the reception tent.  We see her later
looking a bit peeved when the whole tent sings "He's a Jolly Good
Fellow" after the announcement that Martin has re-hired Elaine.

Guess Who's
Coming to Dinner?
It's Louisa's first day back to work after the wedding and there is
chaos in the house.  Morwenna has just come in late, there are
patients in the waiting room and the new childminder has not yet
arrived.  Louisa brings James to Martin and asks him to hold the fort
until the childminder arrives so she won't be late to work on her first
day back.  Martin seems to be trying to not fly off the handle now
that they are married, so rather than row in the waiting room, he
asks if they could have a word.  They go into the kitchen (which, by
the way, is a tip) and he tells her that surgery is about to start.
They start a mini-row about the childminder just as she walks in the
back door.  Louisa gives Martin a peck on his neck and he says,
"What?"  Louisa says, "I said, I'll miss you."  Martin starts to turn
away embarrassed and says, "Yes".
Louisa has just put James to sleep and walks to the door of the
consulting room where Martin is at his desk working on a clock.  She
asks what he is doing and he invites her to come sit next to him and
starts to describe the repair that he is making.  It looks like they are
about to have a really nice moment when Louisa mentions that
tomorrow is their two week anniversary.  Martin dismisses the notion
because two weeks doesn't mean an anniversary.  He turns back to
continue the lesson on clock repair and a disappointed Louisa gets
up and leaves the room.  He looks up to see her leave, and then
just matter-of-factly returns to his clock.
Louisa has come home from work to find that Mel, the childminder,
left Martin to look after the James on his own.  She asks what he
said to her and he insists that he just prescribed a simple medical
treatment and she few off the handle.  He hands James to her so he
can go back downstairs to finish with his last patient and she follows
him down the stairway.  Now they have no one to watch James so
that Martin can attend the school concert with her that evening.
Martin offers to stay home with him, but Louisa insists that he should
be there.  Just then, Mike walks in.  Martin & Louisa don't know him,
but he was the one who fixed the electricity on their wedding night
and helped Aunt Ruth calm James down.  He tells them that Aunt
Ruth sent him to babysit for them so they can attend the concert.
They are both hesitant, but Morwenna knows all about how Mike
saved the day for Aunt Ruth and so they reluctantly decide that they
can go.
Martin attends the concert and stands with Louisa at the reception
and has a short conversation with another mother.  Louisa asks him
to try to be more sociable, although he doesn't understand the point
of talking if there is nothing to talk about.  When a school governor,
Dennis Dodds, comes up to them, Louisa introduces them.  Martin
realizes from the conversation that he is important to Louisa
because he has the power to approve many of the improvements
she is trying to make. But what he doesn't pick up on is that Louisa
doesn't much like Dennis, but is only being polite because of all the
power he wields.  Out of the blue, Martin invites Dennis (and his wife
or partner) to dinner.  He turns to Louisa and says, "What do you
think, darling?"  Louisa is taken aback by this public endearment,
and says that it would be fine.  When Dennis asks, "When?", Martin
says, "Tonight?"  They quickly decide that tomorrow would be
better.  When Dennis leaves, Louisa glares at Martin and her
cluelessly asks, "What?"
On the walk home, Martin tries to explain that he was just being
sociable, but Louisa says that Dennis is a bore.  Martin insists that
he will be able to buy the food for tomorrow, so she doesn't have to
worry about it.  When they walk into the kitchen, they find Mike
rearranging all of their cupboards.  He says that he is maximizing
storage for them and rattles off James feeding, nappy changes and
sleep time with military precision (Mike is ex-army).  Louisa goes
upstairs to check on James.  Martin follows her up there and
expressed his pleasure at what Mike has accomplished around the
house.  As he goes to the door to go back downstairs he says, "Tidy
house, tidy mind."  Louisa counters that it WAS tidy.  Martin
dismissively says, "Yeah", and promptly bangs his head into the
door frame. Back down in the kitchen, Martin starts to ask Mike
about babysitting during the day when Louisa interrupts and says
that it is all sorted and they don't need Mike.  After he leaves, Martin
asks what they are doing about a childminder and Louisa
sarcastically says that she's sure he will think of something.  She
purposely messes up the pens that Mike and Martin had carefully
arranged on the kitchen table and walks out with Martin watching
her dumbfoundedly.
.
It's morning and Louisa is looking all over for some of her school
paperwork.  Martin suggests that maybe she should get her
paperwork done at school.  He has prepared James' bottle and
leaves it on the table when he leaves the room.  Louisa picks it up
and starts to shake it, but Martin hadn't secured the top and milk
splashes all over poor little James' face.
Martin and Louisa are preparing the meal and still are not in
agreement over whether Mike is the right person to watch James.
The Dodds arrive and as Martin lets them in the door he can
already smell alcohol on their breaths - and they have arrived with
two bottles of wine.  Martin attempts to offer them something
non-alcoholic, but they insist they would like wine.  He pours a very
small glass, but Louisa intervenes and fills up wine glasses for
Dennis, Karen and herself, much to Martin's disgust.  As they sit
down to eat, Martin attempts to make small talk by asking if they
have seen a major sporting event recently, but the conversation
goes nowhere.  Karen asks for salt and Martin tries to deny her
request, but Louisa jumps up and gets the salt grinder.  When
Karen holds up her glass for more wine, Martin pours water for her,
but Louisa takes the wine bottle and pours it for Karen.  Later,
Karen attempts to reach for the wine bottle but Martin moves it away
from her and this time Dennis takes the bottle and pours more.
When Martin and Louisa go upstairs to attend to James they have a
conversation about how horrid their guests are.  Louisa refers to
Dennis as a moron and says that they are both drunks.  They don't
realize, until they come downstairs with James, that their entire
conversation had been picked up by the baby monitor and they
return to their furious guests, who immediately get their coats and
leave.  Louisa blames Martin for inviting them in the first place, but
he insists that he did it for her.  Louisa leaves to take James back
upstairs, leaving Martin again befuddled.
Martin and Louisa are having breakfast the next morning and
discussing the previous evening's disaster.  Martin reminds here
that she was the one who called Dennis a moron, and both of them
drunks.  She decides to go see Dennis before school to try to
smooth things over.  Shortly thereafter, Martin runs to the building
site where Dennis fell from a balcony while arguing with Louisa.
After diagnosing Dennis' problem, the two couples start to walk back
to the surgery and Martin notices the cut on Louisa's forehead from
running into a glass door.  When they get to the surgery, he takes
her into the consulting room first to check her wound.  He starts
looking at her hairline and asks about how often she shampoos her
hair.  He diagnoses her with dandruff.  This time he leaves Louisa
befuddled.

The Tameness
of a Wolf
Martin and Louisa are awoken by the fishermen bringing an
unconscious Robert Campbell to the surgery.  Martin asks Louisa if
she recognizes the man and then asks her to bring a glass of water
for the patient before she goes back upstairs to see to James.
Louisa is leaving for work and has a discussion with Mike about his
plans for James during the day.  Martin is standing with his back to
them brewing his espresso, but he is deep in thought after just
realizing that his haemophobia has returned.  As Louisa is leaving
out the back door, she says goodbye to all three of them and looks
slightly concerned that Martin seems unaware of his surroundings.
Martin comes home with the shopping and Louisa is folding the
laundry.  She tells James to say, "Hello daddy" and Martin walks
over to him and feels his forehead.  Louisa tells him about her day
and the confrontation with Bert over Becky Wead's review of his
restaurant.  She asks Martin if Becky really has food poisoning and
he tells her that he doesn't know yet, but that he wouldn't be able to
discuss it with her.  Louisa is upset that he can't help her and as
Martin is leaving the room, he mentions that she seems a little
tense.  Louisa pours out her frustration about the bad day she had,
that she has to leave James with a stranger and spends all day
counting the minutes until she can get home.  Martin's response is
that he told her she went back too early.  That
doesn't sit well with Louisa and she says she can't even get
James to eat now.  Of course, Martin throws more fuel on the fire by
saying that he ate an enormous breakfast and an even larger lunch
with Michael.  Martin leaves the room and Louisa says, "Oh well.
Good for Michael!"
Aunt Ruth stops in the next morning and even though they had a
bad night with James, all seems calm in the Ellingham household.
Aunt Ruth tells them that it is her birthday and Louisa gives her a
hug.  Louisa goes back to stand next to Martin and just gives him a
look and quietly says his name.  Martin only takes a beat to
understand her prompt and invites Aunt Ruth to lunch.  He is
rewarded by a smile from Louisa.  Another indication that they are
starting to develop a "couples shorthand."
.
Martin is attending to the wound on his hand when Louisa walks to
the door of the consulting room.  She expresses her concern about
his injury, but he insists that he is fine and manages to hide his
queasiness over the blood.  He asks about her day and she tells
him about her resolution with Bert over the restaurant review.  She
then tells him that Becky has now written something about him and
reads to him the critical review she wrote about her visit to the
surgery.  Martin's only real reaction is that she used a term that isn't
even a word, but he agrees with Louisa that it was pretty well written
for a 10 year old.  Louisa again asks if he is okay because he looks
very pale, but he insists that he is fine.  Louisa doesn't buy it, but
leaves him to it and he goes back to tending to the wound.

Perish Together
as Fools
Martin walks out onto his porch to enjoy his morning cup of
espresso when he spots Louisa walking up the hill.  The camera
moves to her viewpoint and she sees Martin standing there
watching her walk toward him.  She stops and seems to change her
mind about continuing.  She looks around like she has just realized
she meant to head in the other direction, turns around and starts
walking back down the hill,  Martin watches her walking down the hill
with a slightly perturbed look on his face and he turns and strides
back into the surgery.
Aunt Joan sees Louisa coming down the hill and Louisa tells her
she is concerned that the baby hasn't moved since the previous
day.  Aunt Joan drives her right back up the hill to see Martin and
he takes her into the consulting room.  When Aunt Joan leaves the
room, he seems a little uncomfortable that they are alone and he is
about to examine her.  When he asks her to unbutton the bottom
buttons of her blouse and she tells him it's awkward, he is annoyed
and asks why she came to see him if she's embarrassed.  She
responds that the buttons are a problem because they are tiny and
her fingers are getting fat.  Martin backs down and comes over and
says, "Let me help."  The two of them fumble together with the
buttons and he finally gives up and just folds the blouse up and
folds the top of her skirt down to expose her expanding belly.  He
sits down and applies the fetal monitor to her bare skin and as they
both hear the baby's heartbeat, his face softens and we see a very
rare, and very, very slight Martin Ellingham smile.  He glances at
Louisa and she is relieved when he tells her that the fast heartbeat
they are hearing is completely normal.  They come out to the
waiting room and let Aunt Joan know everything is fine.  Louisa
starts to say something to Martin, but doesn't get it out and he
starts to say something to her, but she has already turned to follow
Aunt Joan out the door.  He watches her leave and she does a half
turn back to him before following Aunt Joan out the door.
Louisa isn't in this scene, but it certainly involves her.  After Martin
and Edith's dinner at the restaurant, she pulls up outside his door
to drop him home.  She leans over and kisses him on the cheek
and he seems a little surprised.  Edith asks, "I think that was
appropriate, don't you?" and Martin responds with a slightly drawn
out (but not entirely convincing), "Yessss".
Martin has been called to Mr Routledge's house and as he is about
to leave, Louisa walks in to make Mr Routledge a cooked
breakfast.  Martin is surprised to see her there and during their
conversation realizes that Louisa is angling to rent out his cottage if
Martin can recommend him into a nursing home.  Martin has been
resisting Mr Routledge's demands that he should go into nursing
care, so he expresses disdain at Louisa's involvement in the affair,
tells her goodbye and turns toward the door.  But Louisa stops him
and pulls from her purse the scan from her hospital visit.  She asks
Martin to take a look at it and says that Dr Montgomery told her that
the baby was smaller than it should be at this stage of the
pregnancy.  Martin gazes at the scan, his first look at his growing
baby.  He looks back at Louisa and tells her that it's not unusual for
the baby to be smaller than usual during development and
reassures her that it all seems fine.  When she goes to take back
the picture, he won't let go of it and asks to keep it to take some
measurements and consult with Edith.  Louisa gets her back up and
says, "You're gonna talk to Edith about OUR baby?"  Martin
responds, "Is that a problem?"  Louisa retorts, "With you discussing
MY baby with YOUR ex-fiancee?  Huh!" and now Martin has HIS
back up, "I see.  It's your baby when it suits you, but it's ours when
you need medical help."  Just then they are interrupted by Mr
Routledge who falls down the steps and breaks his hip - opening
the path for Louisa's new digs!  At the end of the episode, Martin
sits down at his desk to do some paperwork, stops, and opens his
desk drawer.  He gazes down into it and we see that he is staring at
the scan of his son with a look of wonder on his face.

Happily Ever After
Louisa calls Martin because Isobel injured her eye with the party
popper.  They both start out the conversation a bit stumbly with
each other, but Louisa calmly describes what happened and
Martin's voice gains confidence as he diagnoses Isobel's injury.
Louisa then whisperingly asks him how he is and his voice turns
professional as he tells her he is with a patient.  Louisa understands
and says, "Right.  Yep.  See you later."  Martin turns his back to his
patient and quietly stutters into the phone, "Yes.  I...um...look
forward to it.  Bye." and they both awkwardly hang up their phones.
After Mrs Tishell arrives and tells Louisa there is a problem with the
vicar, she calls Martin (who is driving) and asks what happened to
the vicar.  Martin tells her that he broke his hip, but Louisa is getting
really worked up and asks when he was planning to tell her?  When
they arrived at the church and there was no one to marry them?
Martin tells Louisa not to worry, that he has the situation under
control.  Louisa then lowers her voice (Mrs T is listening into the
conversation) and hesitatingly asks him if there is something else
behind this.  She says that people can subconsciously ruin things.
Martin confidently explains that the vicar was drunk, it wasn't his
fault, and to trust him that everything will be fine.  Louisa asks him if
he is sure and he says that he is and will call her later and he hangs
up to head to Mr Potter's door.  Louisa doesn't look as confident as
she clicks off the phone and slowly turns her head in Mrs T's
direction.
Louisa calls Martin to the top of the hill where Isobel has gone into
labour.  He rushes up the stairs with his bag and seems a little less
sure of himself than he usually does in a crisis.  Louisa can sense
this and asks if he knows what he is doing.  Martin responds,
"Theoretically" and then admits that he has never actually delivered
a baby before.  Louisa's response is simply an unsure, "Oh" and
she turns to support Isobel.  During the delivery, Louisa says to
Isobel, "You're doing really well!" and Martin says, "Thank you!"
Louisa looks over at him and says, "I was talking to Isobel."  Martin
safely delivers the baby, although he originally misidentifies the sex
of the baby.  Louisa continues to comfort Isobel and coos over the
baby as Martin hands her to Isobel.  Martin then looks uncertainly
over at Louisa and we see a look of relief and vulnerability that we
rarely see on Martin's face when he is in "doctor" mode.
As Isobel is being loaded into the ambulance with her new baby, she
reminds Louisa to ask Martin about being the godfather.  Martin
stumbles on his words because this is the first he has heard of this,
but he does say "Yes".  As the ambulance drives away, Louisa tells
him that she will make an excuse for him.  Martin is puzzled about
what she means and she tells him that he doesn't have to be the
godfather.  He still seems a bit unsure of it all, but thanks her.
Louisa looks at her watch and says that it's half past two - the
wedding is scheduled for 3:00.  They both become a little
uncomfortable and mumble that they need to get changed - him into
a new suit and her into her wedding dress.  Martin politely says,
"After you" and they start silently heading down the hill.
.
Martin is sitting on the sofa in his living room silently contemplating
the gold wedding band.  His phone starts ringing (Pauline calling to
see why he isn't at the church yet), but he doesn't even seem to
hear it.  He does hear the back door open and turns his head to see
who it is.  It's Louisa, in her wedding dress, walking into the kitchen
with a white envelope in her hand.  As she is about to set it on the
kitchen table, she looks across the room and sees him.  She softly
says, "Martin." and he softly responds, "Louisa."  They each ask
what the other is doing there and Martin stands up and walks over
to her.  She hands him the envelope and as he starts to open it she
says, "It says that I love you.  And I really do.  But..."  He interrupts
and says, "I know.  I wouldn't make you happy."  Louisa, "No."
Martin, "You wouldn't make me happy either."  Both of them are
speaking very softly and they both seem on the verge of tears.  But
this last line from Martin pulls Louisa up a bit and she thinks about it
for a few seconds and agrees that it is probably true.  This seems to
break the spell and Louisa asks him if that's why he is still at the
house.   Martin says that he thought if he just sat there it would be in
her best interest, but she sarcastically asks if it would be in her best
interest to be humiliated standing in the church alone.  He starts to
get his back up a little and says, "But you weren't going to be in the
church."  She starts to raise her voice just a touch and says, "At
least I had the decency to write you a letter."  Martin responds,
"That's not the point."  Just before either going into a full-blown
argument, or possibly actually sitting down to talk it out, they are
interrupted by the Dry Cleaner walking in the back door with Martin's
missing suit.  He thinks the wedding must have already taken place
and starts rambling on about his sore knee.  Louisa says, "I'll leave
you to it" and walks across the living room toward the front door.
Martin watches her with a stricken look on his face and then follows
her to the door.
Louisa walks out onto the porch and closes the door.  As she is
walking across the porch, Martin comes out the door and softly calls
her name.  They face each other and Martin's lips move a few times
as if he is trying to say something.  Louisa softly says, "I know.  Me
too."  They stare into each other's eyes for a few seconds and
Louisa gets a little smile on her face and reaches up to give him a
soft kiss on the cheek.  He half leans his face into the kiss, but he
seems stunned.  Still with the slight smile she softly says, "See you
around."   She turns and walks down the stairs and then down the
hill.  Martin has not moved and his eyes never leave her.  He still
has the stricken look on his face.  The Dry Cleaner comes to the
door and continues to ramble about his knee and starts teasing him
about her leaving him already and prenups.  Martin still hasn't
moved and is still watching Louisa.  Without turning around he
finally, and again softly, says, "Shut up.  Go and wait in the
consulting room."  He continues to watch her walk down the hill and
finally turns and walks into the surgery with just a slight slam to the
front door.

Going Bodmin
In the opening scene of the series, Martin is on a commuter plane
flying along the Cornish coast just north of Portwenn.  A beautiful
woman, who we come to know as Louisa, is sitting directly across
from him.  Martin's seat appears to be at the front of the plane and
faces to the rear, while all of the remaining seats face toward the
front and it's just the two of them sitting in this face-to-face seating
arrangement.  Martin drops his newspaper and begins staring at
her, rather pointedly.  She is becoming annoyed and glancing
around and finally starts to return his stare.  He then leans way in to
get a closer look at her.  She leans in toward him, clearly annoyed,
says, "You've got a problem", stands up, grabs her bag and moves
to another seat a few rows back and across the aisle. His eyes
follow her to her new seat and after she is seated she steals
another glance over at him.  He continues to look in her direction for
a few seconds, but eventually looks down and returns to reading his
newspaper.
Martin has arrived at a large hotel on the coast for his interview.  He
is standing in the lobby being introduced to the members of the
panel when Louisa enters and walks up to the group.  Chris Parsons
introduces her as, "Louisa Glasson, the lay member".  Martin turns
to shake her hand and they are simultaneously startled when they
recognize each other from the plane.  They are both clearly
flummoxed over the situation.
The panel is sitting in front of a large window in the otherwise empty
restaurant.  There is much laughter and it appears that the interview
has gone well and is wrapping up.  Martin asks if there are any
further questions, Chris gushes over their good fortune at finding
such a qualified candidate, and Martin stands to leave.  But he is
stopped when Louisa pipes up and asks a question about his
interpersonal skills.  Martin responds with a couple of lines of
resume, but Louisa isn't having it.  She questions whether a
surgeon who deals mostly with cases and bodies is equipped to deal
with individuals.  Martin stumbles a bit by saying "My work is with the
patients.  That's nothing but dealing with bodies...people."  Louisa is
not impressed and again states that working in the village will
require a good bedside manner.  Chris responds that he believes Dr
Ellingham is more than qualified, but Louisa is still not convinced.
We then see Martin standing in the next room, reading a newspaper
while the panel is finishing up their discussion.  Chris opens the
door and calls for Martin to join them.  As he turns to walk into the
room, Louisa is leaving.  She stops, clearly annoyed, and starts to
warn him about crossing the line.  He interrupts her by leaning in to
stare at her face again, just as he did on the plane.  Louisa
becomes even more annoyed but it changes to confusion when he
starts asking about the vision in her eye.  He puts his hand on her
cheek and pulls at her lower eyelid while continuing to question her
about symptoms and then declares that she has acute glaucoma
and needs to see a specialist immediately.  Chris again calls him
into the room and Martin excuses himself.  Louisa stands there,
slightly bewildered and puts her hand up to the cheek that Martin
just touched.  She starts to walk away but glances back at him.  At
that same moment, he glances back at her and runs his head right
into the closed half door.
.
Martin is walking through the village after leaving the dog at the
Police Station.  As he walks past the school, he is startled to
recognize Louisa (now sporting an eye patch) through the window.
He stops, backtracks a few steps, and stands there staring at her
through the window.  She turns and notices him and they just stare
at each other for a few seconds.  Louisa looks slightly annoyed and
she finally turns her attention back to the students but Martin
doesn't move until he hears Aunt Joan calling him from across the
street.  Aunt Joan remarks that he was skulking at Louisa through
the window, but he insists he didn't realize that she worked there
and had just spotted her as he walked past.
Martin is walking around the village fair and, as usual, is putting his
foot in his mouth.  He spots Louisa, who is with her students (all
dressed as pirates, taking advantage of the eye patch Louisa is still
wearing) across The Platt, and they wave to each other.  Louisa
walks over to him and it appears that the antagonism has cooled
because she is smiling and tells him about the treatment she is
receiving on her eye.  He remarks that she will need to see her
doctor if she has any additional problems and she says that she
would, but that she got off to a bad start with him.  Martin starts to
assure her that her doctor would handle it professionally, but the
penny drops and he realizes that he must be her doctor.  Louisa
says that she should have told him she lives in Portwenn and asks
how he is finding the village.  Martin responds, "Irritating.  Apart from
the primary school teacher, who's a pirate, it seems."  Louisa laughs
and appears to be flirting with him.  She starts to say that he's not at
all like she thought he was and that he's actually..., but he interrupts
her when he spots Gilbert across the way, says he's got to go, and
rudely barges past her.  Louisa turns to watch him leave and it's
clear that the softening of her attitude toward him may have just
swung back in the other direction.
Martin has made his decision not to remain in Portwenn and, while
his car is being towed for repairs, he is walking through the village to
start packing up his belongings.  As he walks past the school, he
slows and stops to again peer through the window at Louisa.  He
stands there watching her interact with her students and the look on
his face grows more and more regretful.  He finally tuns and walks
away just as Louisa spots him.  She turns and watches him walk
down the hill.  She has a look of slight annoyance on her face, but
her mood is not as clear.
Martin is in the surgery packing his belongings.  Bert has just left
after trying to convince Martin that the village needs him and he
pauses and gazes out the window.  Is he looking across the harbour
at the school?  He suddenly seems to make a decision, grabs a
handsaw out of one of the boxes and marches out to the porch.  He
quickly saws in half the wooden stake holding the For Sale sign,
walks it over to the cliff and heaves it over the edge.  He walks back
to the front door, looks back over his shoulder at the school across
the harbour, and with a slight smirk on his face, firmly closes the
door.

The
Portwenn Effect
Louisa is on The Platt and purchases two tickets to the Portwenn
Players' Dance just as Martin walks up.  She tells him about the
event and offers him one of her tickets.  Martin declines saying that
doctors aren't allowed to attend social events and he doesn't
dance.  He then tells her he's busy that night, but she teasingly
reminds him that she hasn't told him the date.  Bert tries to entice
Martin to attend the dance, but Martin says it sounds appalling.  He
leaves and Louisa stands there checking him out as he walks away.
Mark has come to the surgery to talk to Martin about his "size"
concerns and shows him the "Big Boy" pills he bought on the
internet.   He reveals to Martin that the sense of urgency is because
he has a date with the woman of his dreams - Louisa.  Martin at first
misunderstands him and thinks that Mark has guessed that Louisa
is the woman of Martin's dreams, but when he realizes what Mark
actually meant, his gaze starts to wander and you can see that his
mind is now elsewhere.  He snaps out of it and escorts Mark from
the consulting room and then sits back down at his desk with a
faraway look in his eyes.
.
Louisa is at the dance and is starting to realize that Mark has made
some incorrect assumptions about her interest in him.  Mark shows
off his dancing moves with Louisa and she is very excited for him
and tells him what a great dancer he is.  But as she tries to explain
to him that she in not interested in him romantically, she gets close
so that he can hear her over the loud music.  Martin has just arrived
at the hall looking for Mark to talk to him about Stewart and he sees
the end of their dance and what appears to be an embrace.  Of
course, he misunderstands what is happening, and with a
disappointed look on his face turns and leaves the hall.  Louisa
notices him just before he turns to leave and she has a look dismay
at his reaction.
Martin and Al are trying to calm Stewart down as he is destroying
the birdhouses when Mark and Louisa arrive.  Mark also tries to talk
to Stewart but he has run off.  Louisa looks tentatively at Martin as
she arrives and then realizes that they had been blaming Peter
Cronk for the destruction of the birdhouses.  She says she will go
see him in and morning and says that it's awful to have
misunderstandings.  As she says that, she looks over at Martin
hoping that he will understand her double meaning.  As she walks
away with Mark, Martin watches them leave and she briefly turns to
look back at him.  Martin stands there for a few more seconds and
then turns and walks away.
When Martin and Mark are driving out to Stewart's the next morning,
Mark tells Martin that he realized last night that he doesn't fancy
Louisa.  Martin seems a little startled by the news.  Later, after they
have found Peter trying to run away from home, Martin and Louisa
stand next to each other watching Peter's reunion with his mother,
but they seem a little awkward around each other.
