Doc Martin is
IN
Upstairs
The Upstairs area of the Surgery consists of 3 rooms:  Master bedroom, attached bathroom, and
(starting in S6) a small room across the hall that is used as James' bedroom.  The sets for these rooms
were built for use starting in S5.  In S1, S3, & S4, I suspect that they used rooms in cottages nearby for
the few scenes shot in Martin's bedroom.  Because of a picture I found from the set, I think they did
create a set for Martin's bedroom in S2.  The Overview section below has pictures and my speculation.

The set for this area was built before the start of S5.
For information about S1-S4, see below.

There is the master bedroom, attached bathroom,
and James" bedroom across the hall.

We never knew how the hallway from these rooms
led to the stairwell until Martin went running for the
phone and fell down the stairs in S7E1.  The camera
following him from the bedroom and down the hall
confirmed the location of the staircase.

Series 1
.
In this series, there were 3 scenes filmed in Martin's bedroom.  In Episode 3 he
was suffering from the intestinal issues. He was seen sitting on the side of his
bed mixing re hydration salts into a glass of water when he looks out the window
and sees Bert selling water on the Platt.  In Episode 5 he walks into the room to
retire for the night and is surprised by Melanie waiting for him.  In Episode 6 he is
dreaming of Louisa in his bed with him when he is awakened by the dog kissing
him and hears Louisa leaving a message about Peter Cronk's emergency on the
answering machine.

The rooms, furniture, and accessories are all the same in the 3 scenes.  I believe
that they used a bedroom somewhere nearby - perhaps one in a cottage rented
by one of the cast or crew.

Upstairs Overview
.
In the first few years, I don't believe they constructed a set for the upstairs of the surgery.  Because there
were only a few scenes in Martin's bedroom in the first 4 series, I suspect that they used rooms in local
cottages where cast or crew were staying during the shooting.  See the sections below for pictures of the
rooms used in S1 - S4.

This overview will be about the rooms as they are shown starting in S5.  There are 4 areas:

Martin & Louisa's bedroom
James Henry's bedroom

Hallway leading to the stairwell

There are 2 windows on the back wall of
this room.  The smaller one is a small
square window high on the wall next to
the entrance to the bathroom.  The
larger one is a double hung window that
has blue stained glass pieces in all 4
corners, with opaque pieces between at
the top and bottom of the window.

The larger window has a roller shade
that is sometimes pulled all the way
down and sometimes pulled partway
down the window.

to Louisa's side of the bed.

The evolution of Martin's wardrobe is a bit of a head scratcher.  We first saw it in S3E7 when he went into it twice
as he was dressing for the non-wedding.  But the wardrobe was built into the wall in a bedroom that really does
not look like it was a set.  Not only do the walls and doors look far different than the ones we normally see on the
sets for this show, but none of the furniture or the accessories were seen either before or after these scenes
were shot for S3 - which usually indicates that they used a furnished room somewhere nearby.

The first time we glimpse the wardrobe in the newly constructed bedroom set is midway through S5, and it seems
to perfectly match the one from S3.  As time passes, every glimpse we see of the wardrobe confirms that it's the
same front as the S3 one, with one exception - it doesn't have the cross hatch design above because the slope of
the ceiling doesn't leave room for it.  But!  The interior is identical - with the exact same wallpaper lining the walls.

So, it's confounding that the built in wardrobe from the bedroom they used in S3 ended up on the new set.  But
then I remembered a photo (taken on the set) that I found online a few years earlier that contained that same
wardrobe -  although the rest of the room that was visible wasn't familiar.  Looking at it again, I noticed the
unusual design of the bedside table and looked back at some screenshots - it's a perfect match for the one from
S2.  In that series there were only a couple of very quick scenes that were shot through the door and all you saw
was a little bit of the bed and that table.  So I think that they constructed a room on the set for S2 that had the
wardrobe in the corner, but that area of the room never ended up on camera.

My theory now is that it was constructed for S2 and never seen.  So, it was somehow fitted into the room for
those couple of scenes in S3, and then permanently installed in the room that they built on the set starting in S5.

photo from the set that I
believe was a corner of
that room constructed for
S2.  Notice that the
bedside table matches the
one from the screenshot -
and the finish on the bed
also seem to match.

Here is a shot that shows the wall above
the wardrobe.  Because of the angled roof
line there wasn't room to use the
decorative crosshatch piece above.

The shot on the left

the right from S6,
showing the same

Another clue that this is the same piece used
in all three places is the broken piece of wood
just above the door hinge.

You can see the same flaw in the wood in the
unseen wardrobe from S2 (right), the bedroom
used for S3 (below left), and the bedroom built
on the set for S5 + (below right).

James Henry's Bedroom

James started sleeping in a crib in Martin & Louisa's bedroom, but moved into his own room across the hall in
S6.  This room was also used as a guest bedroom for Martin's mother in S6 and for Martin in S7 before he
moved out of the Surgery.

In one scene, we got a glimpse of the window and it has similar stained glass to the one in Martin & Louisa's
room.

Bathroom
.
The only full bathroom in the house (there is a small powder room under the stairs in the Waiting Room) is the
en suite attached to Martin & Louisa's bedroom.  There is one step up into the room from the bedroom.  A
bathtub sits on one side and on the wall facing the door is a green porcelain pedestal sink with a matching green
toilet opposite (next to the door).  The only visible areas for storage around the sink are a couple of wooden
ledges built into the wall next to the sink.  There is also a square cut into the wall above the bathtub for shampoo
and soap bottles, and the windowsill at the head of the tub is also utilized.  Interestingly, there is no shower on
the tub - I guess Martin & Louisa take tub baths every morning?  But then, I think we must consider that there
is a shower room somewhere on that level that we just never see.  A light green fabric chair sits next to the
tub, a wooden changing table sits against the wall across from the tub, and in S8 we see a woven laundry
basket next to the sink.

Hallway leading to stairwell
.
We've seen the little glimpse of the hallway between Martin & Louisa's bedroom and James Henry's bedroom for
a few series now.  The only thing we knew was that there was a window between the 2 rooms with some
accessories sitting on the deep windowsill.  A couple of times, Martin exited his bedroom and turned to the right,
so that was presumably the way to the staircase.  But, in S7E1 while brushing his teeth, Martin hears the phone
ringing downstairs and assumes it is Louisa.  He runs out of the room, down the hallway, and trips down the first
few steps banging into the wall on the landing before tumbling down the longer flight of steps.  Although the
screenshots are very dark, you can make out the turns he makes.  He turns right out of the bedroom, down a
short hall, then left, down another short hall, then right again - presumably onto the short flight of steps to the
landing.  In picture "C" you can see the 2 different wallpapers - the little bit of the one on the far right matches
the wallpaper in the stairwell, so I'm guessing this starts the couple of stairs down to the landing.

I found a picture someone had taken on the set, and it gives a nice view of this hallway.  You can see the large
painting on the wall (the scene of Port Isaac that has hung in several places in the surgery) and a small glance of
the yellowish wallpaper that is on the wall before the more beige wallpaper of the stairwell.

These are scenes from S1
and S2 showing that the
wallpaper in the stairwell
has always been there.

Note that in S2 it was torn
at the top.
.
.
.
.
In S4 there were several changes to the sets,
including several radiators, wallpaper in the
Consulting Room, and wallpaper on the
bottom half of the stairwell wall.  All of these
things were only there in S4 and it was all
back to normal in S5.

This picture above is how the stairwell
normally looked with the painted wall.  On the
right are two views of the wallpaper.
.
.
.
.
On the left side of the room is a window with a large carved wooden fish on the windowsill.  Against the back
wall is the bed with a green wooden headboard.  There are wooden tables on each side with tall lamps and a
painting on the wall above on each side.  On the right table there is also some type of carved head - another
Buddha?  The bedroom door is on the right wall, and on the front wall there appears to be a dresser (you can
see it in the foreground of the photo of the window above).  There is also a picture on the wall above the
dresser (you can see it behind Martin) and another one in the corner between the dresser and the window
(see behind Melanie).
.
.
One interesting shot is
when Martin looks through
the window to see Bert on
the Platt.  On the left, the 2
pictures on top are from
screenshots from the
episode, and the 2 on the
bottom are from a video
someone took of the
interior of Fern Cottage.

You can see that the shot
of Martin standing next to
the window was not filmed
in the cottage, because
Fern Cottage has a stone
area on the wall - an
extension of the chimney
from the fireplace in the
room below.  But when the
camera shot moves to
show the view through the
window, it appears that they
did actually film that from
Fern Cottage.  The angle
and the roof line of the
cottage next door match.

Series 2
.
There were 3 scenes filmed in this room in S2, but all of them were from outside
the room looking in, so there wasn't much visible.  In Episode 1, Martin is putting
on his jacket and hears Pauline and Al talking - he thinks they are talking about
him and his possible interest in Louisa.  You can see a window on the right wall,
the light wood headboard on the bed, and the table to the right of the bed holding
a lamp and a blue bottle.  There's an angled ceiling and the walls are made from
rough boarding painted white.  In Episode 2, Peter Cronk comes into the room in
the middle of the night to show Martin the rash he has developed.  In this scene
more of the bed is visible and there is a better view of the nightstand.  There is
also a glimpse of the door in the shot of Peter standing in the doorway.  In
Episode 3, we see an almost identical view of Martin in the bed when he hears
Wallace Flynt leaving him a message.

I had found a picture from the set and was able to connect it to S2 because it has
a nightstand on the left side of the bed that matches the one we saw on the right
side.  Also, in the shot of Peter in the doorway, there is a white box on the wall
that matches the one from the set.  So, it looks like they constructed a whole set -
including that wardrobe that was never seen - just for these 3 very short scenes.

Series 3
.
This bedroom was seen in just 2 episodes in S3.  In Episode 5, we saw Martin
waking up the morning after breaking up with Louisa, still fully clothed on top of
his bed.  We get a very quick view of one wall - that includes a dresser and
fireplace.  In Episode 7, he is in the room twice (4 scenes with cuts to other
scenes between), both times getting dressed for the non wedding.  The first
one after the procedure on the pig when he discovers that the dry cleaner gave
him a dress, and the second one after delivering the baby on the hill.

We only see 3 sides of the room - see my drawing below.  The top is a small
fireplace and a dresser, on the left is a closed door (never used - but maybe to a
bathroom?), a nightstand, bed and a wooden chair, and on the bottom is the
wardrobe in the corner (that perfectly matches the one seen in the S2 set
picture), a dresser with a mirror above, and the doorway out of the room.

The tall ceiling and the more polished look of this room makes me think that this
is also a room in a cottage somewhere that they used for these few scenes.
Besides the wardrobe, the only other items in the room that they have used
before (or since) are the two lamps on the dressers.

Series 4
.
In S4 there is only one 7 second scene in Episode 3 set in the bedroom.  Martin
is seen sleeping and waking up to his phone ringing - it's Penhale calling
because his brother has collapsed.  All we see is a small portion of the
wooden headboard and the nightstand.

See below for the only other upstairs scene - another 7 second scene in the
bathroom in that same episode.  I have to believe that these were both filmed in
a bedroom and bathroom in a nearby cottage.  It wouldn't make sense for them to
build a bathroom set with tile on the wall for this short scene.  There will be a set
for these rooms next series and there is no tile on the bathroom wall.
